For the Wing Commander fans

I figured this would be a good place to post about this, since we all came here because of what would ahve been the last great space combat sim.

I am so excited right now. I hope he does this right.

Well the guy sure used to know what he was doing! We'll just have to hope that after 10 years away he's still got it!

I'll say I'm cautiously optimistic tho!

it's about dam time.

It's just so long ago, I hardly remember anything about the games. It's probably better that way. Not to mention the live action movie. ;)

I'm curious to see what he's going to do though. At least he's not going to start his own space program. :D

I actually enjoyed the movie, it was crap, but I liked it.

Actually, I liked it too. Sure it wasn't great, but IMO it is in fact better than a good 80% of the scifi out there right now
• Very interesting.

There are some pieces of concept art on the site. If they are from this new project, then it looks like it has a more civilian focus.

Although it could just be concept art from Freelancer.

Also, while looking through their forums, I stumbled across this rather intriguing article.

I'm not getting my hopes up about anything from LucasArts. After the utter crap they've been churning out for the last few years, my expectations from them are very low indeed. Which is a shame, because for a good time they set the bar for what I looked for in games

The only WC I played was Prophecy, which supposedly wasn't very good, but it I enjoyed it and of course it stared Mark Hamil and Biff.

I actually imagine that this is what the ITF was supposed to be, but with less linear gameplay and or course real physics...

Prophecy wasn't a bad game, it's just after Wing Commander 3 and 4, which offer decisions and branching storylines, it's a bit of a step backward.

You can buy the games on gog.com though, if you feel like giving them a try :)

I liked the movie too. It was fun, and seeing how that's what I go see a movie for... ;)

I downloaded Wing Commander 3 & 4 off GOG, really must get around to playing the at some point. First I need to find enough desk space to put my joystick :s

I signed up to get my Golden Ticket. ;)

I enjoyed Freelancer quite a lot, one of the few space shooters I actually played all the way through. :)
• Wing Commander, Strike Commander, and Freelancer?!?

I had no idea the same man was behind all three...and I love all those games! :) BOO YEA!

To us "old farts" Chris Roberts is still somewhat of a hero. ;) He's probably still a nobody in Hollywood, but he sure knows how to tell compelling stories in video games. I'm glad he found his way back. :)

Tomorrow, we find out what this is all about.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Sure looks sweet. :)

So it's going to be a Wing Commander MMO-RPG with single-player and multi-player elements, requiring a bad-a$$ PC to play. ;)

They are one year into the development process and they are now letting people into this project to participate in its production and contribute to its support. It is going to mix a lot of elements of the X space games and Eve Online.

Of course it all sounds great, but unlike other developers, Chris Roberts has the means to pull it off. At last, the PC is getting some love again. ;)

I'm excited! :D

You can watch the presentation here. I missed the beginning of it, so rewatching that now. The graphics alone look amazing, can't wait to actually play this thing! :D
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
It's online. :(
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Awww... poor baby! :D

I'm not too hot about that either, but you can play single-player off-line. ;) But then anything is possible at this stage. I guess even Roberts can't get by without a little hype. :)
• It's Online! :D

(I've been waiting for a GOOD online game with a story. Guild Wars tried, Age of Conan did good for the first bit of it, but still had that sense of "Everyone is doing the same thing".

Instances are a good thing for story telling IMHO. Add in a persistent Universe, where between missions I can send messages to friends, etc...yea, it can work. And I think he could do it.

I LOVE the Fidelity he's showing as well.
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Gotten a good start. Currently at $153k with almost 3k contributors.

I chipped in with 30 USD. :)
• WORFWORF The Burninator
Just contributed too.

Kinda makes me want to install Freelancer :)

I'm actually very excited now! If it was anyone else doing the presentation I'd have thought "yeah yeah whatever", but just the fact that its Chris Roberts makes me think it might actually work!

• Okay, I'm in love. This is exactly the kind of game I've been wanting for a good decade. Hell, it is exactly the kind of game wanted to make if my coding skills ever evolved beyond intermediate. Hell a friend and I even drafted a design doc for this kind of thing. Right down to the seamless space to ship boarding. All we had thought of that I don't see any evidence of yet was the ability to blow holes in the sides of ships and have it actually affect the boarding party, to the point where they could literally fall out into space.

So the trailer features the UEES "Paul Steed"(*), a Bengal Class Carrier.

(*) I just learned of Paul Steed's passing some time ago, another big name in the 3D graphics industry who left us way too early. The homage is certainly not going to go unnoticed. :)
