Gawler is about 35km away from Adelaide.. Adelaide in turn is about 1800-2000 klicks from Sydney... a long way... two days travel if you take it easy by road... a flight or about two hours I think...

There's a nice volcano in between Melbourne and Adelaide. Mt Gambier. It has a cool look that changes colour with the temperature.

to clear up a little potential confusion Biggles is talking about the crater lake changing colour with the season and consequently the water tempreture.... Mt Gambier is also a regional centre town and a pretty one at that...
Biggles is just appealing to my geological side interest of volcanology...
I'd still like to see White Island even though the acidic lake is no more...

Yeah I missed that as well, which I'm very dissapointed about. But you have to admit, there is something cool about going to an island where no living thing can survive, with or without an acid lake.

White Island is basically a volcano off the coast of New Zealand that falls under the category of a Grey Volcano. The Island is basically made up of the entire volcano.
Up until recently there was an acidic lake at the bottom of the crater. This was lost to a very explosive eruption that happened recently which blew it's contents and a good portion of one side of the mountain into the Sea.
