KDE is better, but I won't tell you why.

Ok... time for a proper post!

For me it has to be KDE, I've used Gnome before and just don’t like it, looking at the apps and utils that come with it it is just a "poor mans" KDE!

KDE is easy to use, familiar, powerful, fast and friendly. While I don’t really care about the familiar and friendly sides it is the perfect desktop to install for a large scale network of computers, you don’t get as many "how do I do this" and that. I recently upgraded my workplace network from an NT based Novel Networking disaster to KDE/Linux based systems, it works a treat.

The apps being developed by the KDE team also promote the use of this desktop (the KOffice suit is coming along very nicely!) and everything fits in and looks snug. And of course there is the inbuilt web browser. I hate Mozilla with a passion so this is a god send..

I remember changing from RedHat to Mandrake (which at the time was just the Redhat distro with KDE installed as the default desktop) just to get the KDE goodness all there!

Anyway, KDE gets my vote

Oh yeah, I expect a lot of follow ups based on the arguement that KDE is too easy to use... the same people who say stuff like "I dont use Dreamweaver, I use notepad!" thinking its cool etc...

Productivity is essential! The same way I use Dreamweaver to meet deadlines I use KDE on networks to reduce my headaches and make sure people know what to do and how to do it!

Ok... done!

Well... I haven't had Linux installed for very long, so all you'll get right now is my first impression.

I installed both, and have logged in using both, and so far I actuall prefer the look and feel of Gnome.

This could change however as time goes on after I get into this more...

• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Ok, here's a couple questions...

Why would LILO not boot from the hard disk where Grub does? I set up the partitions the same...

Is there a way to get Linux to use both video cards for a dual display setup? It sees the cards in the Hardware Browser, but I can't seem to find any settings to enable the PCI video as a secondary...

That's it for now... thanks...
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I can answer your second question, Jack. Yes, but it's *expletive* hard. X-windows really doesn't seem to like dual monitors in most cases. Of course, this is probably changing rapidly.

Onto the main question: I veer towards the Gnome side a bit, but will readily admit that KDE is easier to use, faster, and probably more productive. Plus KDE has the way cool Liquid theme. I use KDE as default, but only changed to it after our BOFH linux admin didn't bother installing Gnome on the new remote linux system at uni. There are a couple of things that I prefer Gnome over KDE for, but KDE seems to be the best overall.

This is a multifold question. I actually like Gnome's feel better - it acts like its more functional (though less set up) on the default RedHat install. However I've also heard that Gnome has stability problems. KDE is nice, and I especially like the default installed options and settings included on the SuSe Linux install disk. RedHat seems to skimp a bit on the functionality aspect with KDE (probably why I liked Gnome better) but it seems to be entirely becuase of how RedHat arranges the interface, not becuase of KDE.

Overall:
- KDE is more functional but not well set up on RedHat for controlling settings in X-Win.
- Gnome is a bare bones package on RedHat but better at controlling settings in X-Win.
- RedHat does a very poor job of setting default settings and menu systems on BOTH KDE and Gnome!!!!
- Other Linux releases include better default settings and menu systems then RedHat
• Excellent responses! (Except for jambo_jimmy) Kidding.

More thoughts? Setup gotcha's?

Thanks!

I'm getting Mandrake 8.2 tonight... so this should be interesting...

KDE is my choice with my SuSe 8.0. Easy to use and to a degree intuitive. Gnome is my secondary X window mostly for graphic stuff less memory and less cluttered.

An aside. Good News http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/08/17/213253&mode=thread&tid=106
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Mandrake is a fun distribution. It's probably the easiest out there, aside from Lindows.

There was a good point I wanted to make in KDE's favour this afternoon, but now I've forgotten what it was.

Something about "Liquid" maybe?

Hahahaha
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Well...

I'm less than impressed with Mandrake 8.2 installation...

Although it detected multiple displays and attempted to set them up, my machine will only boot to the command line interface.

And for some reason it just can't seem to find my sound card at boot. Installation knows what it is, but it just won't use it.

I'm a little annoyed at some of the vagueness of certain window during install, as to what device I am dealing with (namely which video card I was setting up and monitor etc).

I will try again at work today, and then tomorrow moring at home here...

I might go back to RH 7.2 if I have too much trouble.

Best thing about KDE??

KDevelop,Microsoft charges big bucks for something that aint as good
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
You should leanr how to change your boot run level yourself, Jack.

Works fine if I chose only one display, even finds the sound card ok... That's at home...

At work, with a machine that has two network cards, I get the same vagueness about which card I am doing settings for...

The other annoying part is how it doesn't seem to like this Trident Video card. W2K can use it fine, but I can only realistically use 640x480 256 color in Linux... that sucks...

Red Hat has been seemless so far except for the burp in using LILO as a boot loader.

oh well, lots more to try out...

It may be dated, and it may be heavily biased toward Microsoft products, but there are some experience points that can be gleaned from it...

Namely... Don't EVER, use a Trident 3D 975 for a Linux, NT 4, or OS/2 box...

Interesting to see some similar problems with LILO also...

Cheers!

How about Gentoo?
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Gentoo is a file manager app, not a window manager.

The only time i run X at all is when i am using mozilla or opera, other than that i run command prompt. since my Unix box is a server.

But i've got Gnome 2 an Sawfish running on it.

Eh? Last time I checked the server to which I was recently connected, set up by an old friend, Gentoo was flavor of Linux distribution. It may also be a file manager app, but neither the friend nor I have heard of it.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Really? Of this I was not aware. On the remote linux system at uni we have had an app called Gentoo that is a simple file management thing, like what the File Manager was in Windows 3.1. It's been there for 3 years at least. I didn't know there was a Gentoo distro.

By the way, does anyone here know how to set up a remote X server?
