    while my sources do some more checking I think you'll find that this ole girl is the 'Vikrant' (sp?), she last saw service with the Indian Navy, shes had a long and very interesting career. The poor english and mannerisms in the blurb also smack of someone with a non-english speaking background.

    I'm not 100% sure but I think shes one of the Colossus class, a 'light' aircraft carrier type built for the British Navy.

    Damn...

    I so wish a four tonne solid gold/diamond meteorite would fall from the sky into my yard...

    I think you'll find the auction is legit.. despite the wanker bids... if the auction was a big hoax, you wouldnt pick her. Her credentials are very possible, very plausible. If you were going to auction off something as a joke you'd pick something like a Nimitz class, or the New Jersey or something equally implausible.

    be interesting to see if she does actually sell, and to whom, I just hope they dont scrap her... that would be an abysmal waste

    I believe the auction is legit as it made the news, etc and it was confirmed. However, I bet most of those bids are fake.

    Actually it's Iowa-class.
    (ships in that class are Iowa, New Jersey, Missouri, Wisconsin)

    Anyone ever read [i]Cryptonomicon[/i], by Neal Stephenson? Best book I've read in a long time... we need to build a DATA HAVEN on the carrier! (Basically, one of it's numerous plot strands was about a data haven on a really liberal island nation in the Pacific, so that no governments could censor the information contained within, as well as creating an electronic currency that would be good anywhere in the world, online. Plus, y'know, a whole lot more that I won't spoil...)

    Really, we [i]would[/i] be the coolest site on the web... And they really can't stop us from becoming a nation; they could prevent us from seceding from their country, but what we'd be doing is closer to emmigrating. :) With Sanfam and Biggles as our leaders (and Striker providing the underwater cable necessary :p), we can lay the foundations for the Internet v2 :eek:

    Well hey, that was a joke (albeit a good one) but this one was fr real. At least that's the tide I go off of it. And if the starting bid was 6 million, the 90 million they were going at wouldn't have harmed the danish shipyard one bit, I suppose. :)

    Yeah, but a bunch of people found it funny enough to post the same thing on Ebay. And did anyone catch the article about the guy selling his kidney for something like 50,000 pounds, because his daughter needed some kind of exotic treatment he couldn't afford? Needless to say, Ebay now has a "no Human tissue" regulation. :)

    and dont pick me up on semantics... names and classes of carriers and warships are so regularly disputed its not funny.

    The current crop of carrier designs are 'support carriers', designed for supporting interdiction and special forces missions etc.

    Anyways, lets hope they quietly go away and start again with the auction for a realistic price, my bet is this was always intended to be a publicity stunt even if they are genuine about selling it.

    On the 'new country' stakes... nobody has put a test case before the international court in regards to 'terra nullius' (land belonging to no-one), other than Sealand, (and that is a man made structure, basically an oil rig type platform). Actually dropping some rocks on a sea mount somewhere hasnt actually been tried.

    As usual, the easy part would be building the island itself. Garnering enough support to survive as an independent country without being annexed by your closest neighbour, is the hard part.
