The Unstoppable Mr. 'K'
in Zocalo v2.0
After two and a half years of dating, I proposed to my girlfriend Cary yesterday. I can't say it was a surprise to everybody, since we've pretty much resigned ourselves to this path for a year or so. But I was still hoping it would be a surprise for her.
Cary picked out her own ring, and while that blew some of the surprise, I felt that it was much better for her to have exactly what she wanted, and luckily, she agreed.
I didn't go for anything ultra-fancy when proposing, but she seemed think I did pretty well.
Yesterday was her birthday, so I told her that I wanted to take her out for a nice dinner. Before dinner, we walked around the campus at UNC Chapel Hill (where Cary did her undergrad studies). Chapel Hill campus is by itself pretty romantic, but what made it even better for us was the fact that we had done the same thing for our first Valentine's Day (we're not big fans of commercialization part of Valentine's Day, so we tend to avoid the candy and cards and just do something nice as if it were any other day).
I'm not sure if you know much about Chapel Hill University (I sure didn't), but there's a large tree in the center of the campus called the Daive Poplar...it's rumored to be the site where the college's founder William Davie selected the site for the university in 1792. That's actually not true, though; the tree was named about a hundred years after the university was founded -- but it sounds neat :). The tree was around in 1792, though, and has survived ever since. There's a weathered concrete bench under the tree that has been there since 1914.
On Valentine's Day in 2004, Cary and I went on a walk through Chapel Hill (I'd never been there, much to her shock, so she gave me a tour) and we sat on the bench under the tree. She told me that the legend was that if you kiss your girlfriend on the bench under the tree, you'll get married (Another version is that if you kiss your sweetheart under the tree, your marriage will be a happy one.). She asked me if I wanted to "tempt fate", so I said sure.
I figured that would be a good place to propose. Cary said afterwards that it was a very "her" thing to do. That bench was ass cold (literally) yesterday, but I think it worked out pretty well.

All the best to both of 'ye. :)
Good luck!! :)
weird....your the second person i know to get engaged in the last 5 days
Ihadwondered what happened to youin recent times. Glad to see RL taking a turn for the good. ;)
Cheers!
And Congrats! It's always good to hear of news from this "real life" so many of us dedicated our time to lately.
You should really get your (now official) other half to post on here sometime, if only to truly "complete" the process ;)
Also, it's quite nice to finally hear from you again. It's been quite a long time! Thought that perhaps you'd fallen off like a couple of others over the years...
Note to the spectators...DO NOT THROW SPOO, it stains :)
-R.
And Jack and SanFam, I hadn't relaly dropped off the earth. In fact, I visit here quite often...every day or so, give or take. But I never seem to have time to post anything...work has been extremely busy..I've worked my share of 24 hour days (I'm the boring Jack Bauer!).
Anyway, I could never abandon this place...I still have Marc's e-mail to me from 1997 saying that a Pentium 133 would be more than adequate for the B5 game. :)
And I get to be the first to say "congratulations!" :p
Oh yeah? Well I'm still the first to say "Congradulation!"

Thats exactly what my wife and I did, that way she gets something that you know shes going to like.
Congratulations! Are you starting to think about wedding plans? Big weddings are such a pain... better to have a small wedding and a big honeymoon :)
The wedding is going to be sizeable. We've talked about it for months...Cary already called the church to reserve the date...the day of the wedding will be April 14, 2007. :)
That's just the thanks I get after years of not-quite-selflessly semi-committing myself to this place! Selflessly, I say!
You'd better at least consider streaming the ceremony ;)
