B5 + Homeworld Engine = God

I would like to see a homeworld based game/mod where you are in the b5 universe. i think someone was trying to do that, but was failng miserably.

Could have all the different races, with all the ships, b5 would be the mothership, or maybe b4 and have it set in the great shadow war, that way it could be innovative and still be b5

in any case i dont think it would be hard. but it would indeed be fun.

Well i talked to my friend a few weeks ago and lets just call him, "The self proclamied master of all that is homeworld" and he had nothing nice to say, and respecting his opinion i assumed it wasnt doing to well

And taking a second look at this mod i think it actually looks pretty damn good, although there are some textures that could be worked on, and b5 itself isnt rounded. i think its good.

I consider myself a somewhat skilled artist, if you need some work on it id be happy to contribue.

    hmmm...

and I thought I was arrogant...

word to the wise... critisism is a beautiful thing... it stops us all from becoming deluded... but make sure you are doing it with the correct intent...

but I get my facts straight and I make sure that whatever I say or claim has both evidence and thought behind it.

to illustrate... you claim to know alot about B5... (and B4 for that matter) well explain to me how the human race of a thousand or so years ago would be able to point anything other than some sharp pointy swords and some sharp pointy language at the Shadows...

    What? You?? Perish the thought.

Now, *, if that is your real name. I respect the hell out of the people who mod the games. It ain't for money, or fame, or nuthin like that. Just a love of the game, and a love of B5.

Not to bash you or anything, but making blanket statements with out checking the facts is like reviewing a movie or television show (cough...cough...Rangers), without seeing the completed project. Does it happen? Yeah. Is it fair? No.

Now, we're a friendly crowd of people, except for Biggles when his tank needs changing (he get's a bit cranky...moves topics around. Stuff like that), and Shadow Boxer (he's an anti-social misfit, but he's OUR anti-social misfit); and we try to reserve judgement until we have personal experience with the product.

Do we always do it? Not really, but it's the thought that counts.

Why are you complaining that B5 isn't rounded? Want to see something? I'll show you something:

Now I know that looks rounded, but it is still not as round as the show. But that is being drawn by an engine that was specifically designed to draw models of that detail level, especially that particular model. Keep in mind that the mod people built their own models whereas the B5:ITF crew trimmed down the show models. Also remember that Homeworld's engine is not capable of the sort of detail that the B5:ITF engine was capable of because it works in a different way. Now if the Homeworld engine was capable of such a thing I'm sure the modders would have put it in.
Sorry, when people criticise mods I get defensive if I don't agree.

Apart from that, the mod is excellent. They've done an incredible job with a limited and inflexible engine.

  • The version of the mod that I downloaded was really weird (it was good fun as well). I think it was the one before the one that is currently the latest one. I actually like the ones where the graphics are a little more basic; I just like the way it makes things look. More abstract.

I am going to pop in because I founded that mod and ran it for over a year and a half.

Don't listen to other modders opinions on other people's work. Everyone is prejudiced against everyone elses work because everybody is working to achieve different goals. Our goal is (or at least was when I left... I don't watch it close enough to know if that has changed) to make a mod playable on systems as low as a p2 300 (my system, btw) and play it well. I was able to run 300 ship battles with little loss in framerate. I haven't tried, but I am sure on a new system you could easily ramp that up to 600 or more.... B5 battles the way they are supposed to be

The reason we could have so many ships was because of the low poly counts (under 600 for most ships, and almost all done with LoD files, which are lower poly versions of the ship used at different distances). So some ships don't look as polished as other mods, but that is not what we were aiming for. Let the others do eye candy We did action.

Jack: Yeah it is. I still remember the day he posted those three pics. Many open mouths that day. You know, I never actually saw your version of B5.

A small green box? Sounds like it might not have installed correctly.
Also, make sure you have installed the latest Homeworld patch or it won't work properly.

Some models are indeed a small green box. This box is a placeholder for models that have yet to be included. Homeworld apparently does this when an object cannot be loaded.

    Drives you nuts eh?

The reason B5 isn't rounded is because homeworld does NOT likt high-poly models. I belive it's limit it around 400-500,that is incredibly LOW, and no where NEAR enough to make a "round" B5.

Actually, the 400-500 poly limit is something we imposed ourselves. Homeworld has handled models of up to 20,000 polygons (I once imported a high poly warlock to see what would happen).

The reason I imposed those limits was two-fold. One, to keep the mod playable on the low end systems that many, including myself, are still forced to use. The second was to allow the kinds of massive battles that B5 is known for. I have successfully run on my p2 350, 64 megs ram, 8 meg vid card, over 1000 ships in combat with little slowdown. I am sure you agree, that is phenomenal and well worth the loss in visual quality on some, but not many meshes

So ends my rant... I find myself making it every month or so when people challenge my views on appropriate poly counts in Homeworld.
  • JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
If poly count per model is the issue...

Why not in the case of the B5 Station, break it up into say 5 to 10 seperate models, and just group the models (parent them for lack of a better term) as needed?

Such as the rotating section models get grouped as one unit, and fixed framework models as another. This would allow you to focus your poly count on smaller sections, and be able to make them rounder. The trade off would be the loss of ~10 ships models, and some work on getting things glued together correctly.

I'm ignorant of the programming requirements for Homeworld so forgive me if my idea is totally undoable (Is that a word? ).

  • Drazi GuyDrazi Guy Elite Ranger
It is undoable actually... at most you could have 2 meshes, and that would cause a problem in several of the SP missions.

Poly count per mesh isnt the problem, just overall poly count. # of poly's onscreen, not in a particular mesh.
  • CnlPepperCnlPepper Earthforce Officer
We had planned to bump B5 poly counts to 1500 with heavy lodding as you only have one of them....TKD (modeller) never got time to finish it though
