Good Notebooks

RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
I have a question. Are there any good notebooks for under 1000 (or in that range). I'm not getting one, just seeing price range compared to value. Thanks

It depends on how you define "good"

A better question would involve stating what you want out of the computer, then asking if the price range is a feasable market for such a product.

yeah...

start with your needs...

if all you want to do is play with Orifice 2000 or surf the net wirelessly or something then a low end machine will do...

if you want to play games and work in graphics apps and 3D... then its a different story.

build your machine around your software so to speak

$1000? That's waaaay too high.

Trapper Keeper's cost like $4.99

Or if you're not into anything fancy, you can find a classy 1" 3-ring binder for under $3.00...

Oh oh! Blow more than your life savings on that really cool Toshiba from Japan that was on Slashdot the other day. 10"x6.5"! It's tiny! If only I was rich...

• A friend of mine is also looking into a laptop for college, mainly just for typing up notes in class and maybe some web surfing. Any suggestions?

• I'm getting a new computer this summer, but I can't decide between a desktop and a notebook. I like the mobility and compact size of the notebook, but even the top of the line $1,600+ dell notbook can't compete with the gaming power of a cheaper desktops.
Its basicly to do with the 3d card, the Dell Inspiron notbook I found could only carry a 64mb Geforce 4 go card, which basicly is a good as an MX desktop card.

I probably wont be able to get another computer for a few years, so I don't know if spending more on a moblie, but less powerful notebook is going to be worth it with the rapid increase in gaming requirments.
• If you want a notebook, make sure you check the keyboard out if you plan on using it all the time. I had a Toshiba Satellite I bought last year (650Mhz, 128MB RAM, DVD, 100 Base-T, Modem) and I traded it for a IBM Thinkpad T20 (700 P3, 384MB RAM, DVD...etc) which IMO is the best notebook out there. The keyboard rules.....

Well, here's something I found for just over $1000: http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=206708

the NEC MobilePro.
9.4" diagonal, SVGA DSTN color touchscreen
Ports: USB, Serial, VGA out, infrared transmitter/receiver, audio jack
168MHz MIPS processor
Microsoft® Windows® CE, Handheld PC Professional Edition operating system
24MB ROM (replaceable), 32MB RAM
Lithium ion battery, AC adapter
1-year limited warranty1
Stylus pen for touchscreen, 78-key keyboard
1 Type II PC Card slot, 1 Type II CompactFlashTM slot
Integrated V.90 modem
Looks to be a great system!

While not exactly a powerhouse, it certainly does what your friend wants, and has a perfect formfactor for the need. I'm sure this could be found for less elsewhere.

TheEXone, in your situation, I would *not* buy a gaming laptop. It just isn't proper. The problem is, when you get a gaming-capable notebook, often the size and weight skyrocket (note the 10.5 pounds of the Alienware Majestic). The performance dell systems are also heavy and clunky. 6.6 pounds may not sound heavy, but it wears down on you.

I have a dell inspirion 4100, 1ghz PIII-M with 512 ram and a 32mb DDR geforce2 go. I really like it, it's small and yet still has some power in it. The price wasn't bad either...

You should also shop in the Dell refurbished sections for even better deals!

Don't buy a laptop for playing games on. If you want to play lots of games, desktop is the only way to go. Only get a laptop if you're a gamer and need the portability as well because you have nowhere to put a desktop. If you really need a laptop, you're better off getting a normal one and saving for a decent desktop, IMHO (save me, I just used an achronym).

Actually, this thing was a better deal than dell had in the refurbs at the time..although I only got it from them with a mere 128mb of ram and upgraded it myself.

I am a gamer, but I needed/wanted a portable, and it was like $50 more to get this vid card as opposed to getting a 16mb ATI rage mobility pile of goo. For any hardcore gaming and stuff I of course use my desktop, but this thing allows for an instant lan party

I suggest you look into building a small form-factor Gaming PC.

do some research on small form-factor cases and flex ATX/Micro ATX motherboards. You can fit a good deal of stuff onto them, and if you have the funds, a 1.5 or 1.6 ghz Pentium 4.
