25 years is a long time...

But that's how long Voyager 2 has been going now. Voyager 1 is about 16 days behind on travelling time, but has 17AU on distance.

These two little travellers are what really inspire me in people's ability to achieve anything when they put their minds to it. I only hope a shortsighted government doesn't cut funding while they're still alive.

Just think, within ~7 to 21 years, the first manmade interplanetary object will become the first manmade interstellar object.

  • I think NASA will support both of the probes as long as they are still operational.

I mean how much can it possibly cost? It's not like they have to do maitnience on them.

And how can can voyager 1 be farther by 17 AU? Thats a decent chunk of the soloar system right there.

They will be back to find their makers!

seriously, Voyager was the think that made me interested in astronomy, hopefully, theyll function for many more years to come, perhaps they can even relay some info on the ISM to us

Passive fields. January two thousand and twelve. A nation that stands alone. Cold voices, faces pale, Gathered unto their judgement day. Such words remain unspoken. Such pride remains unbroken. Just mothers to stand in vain and cry. Tears and medals in the rain. Shall I recall when justice did prevail? No reason to be found why reason did fail. The all clear resounding. The way was clear to rebuild this land. Shall I call on you to guide me well, To see our hopes and dreams fulfilled? On this day of our ascension.

Voyager 1 and 2 got sent on different paths through the solar system and ended up at different final velocities (and vectors), and after 25 years of higher speed you get a lot of seperation.

Actually the two probes are heading on a quite divergent vector, one is climbing abover the plane of the solar system, the other diving below it.

You know what? I forgot to link to the NASA article about this.

Messiah: Same here. They made me realise there was more interesting stuff beyond Earth than on it.

Yeah. Deep Space 1 is a great little probe that's done amazing things, but I'd like to see how alive it is in 20 years.

I gotta agree here, I remember an old "Nova" special that was on overa decade ago about these two, it pretty much changed my life by getting me interested in astronomy (and by extension, Sci-fi).

I first heard about them when I was about 8ish, and they were really inspiring.
