Bomb attack in Finland. yesterday evening.

PJHPJH The Lovely Thing
Looks like we Scandinavians aren't safe either. It's heavily suspected that a big explosion yesterday evening in a busy shopping mall in Vantaa Finland was a bomb attack. It's not sure if it's an actual terrorist attack though. 7 people were killed and tens of others injured.

Here's a quick link to CNN's article: http://www.cnn.com/2002/WORLD/europe/10/12/helsinki.explosion/index.html

  • The families and injured have my condolences. No matter who what or why this kind of premeditated act is totally unacceptable. If it wasn't something like a gas line explosion it is by definition terrorism.

It will be frightening to see what it really was however. No conclusions should be jumped to but:

Finland does have a rather high national suicide rate among 18-24 year olds. We could be seeing a new wave of "look at me" style suicides with the mentality that "If I don't want to live, they shouldn't either."

This could be unrelated to the Middle East or Afghanistan. Maybe someone who doesn't like shopping malls and the economic policies of Finland. Or it was Swedish fishermen upset over fishing turf (unlikely).

Then again, Finland does/did have troops (50 of them) in Afghanistan. It was a hit on a mall. That French oil tanker turned out to be a terrorist attack too.

What's that supposed to mean Lord Refa!

Well I don't think that it has to do with any suicidal behaviour. Sure it's possible, but quite unlikely IMO. Also the small group of Finnish troops in Afghanistan are not actually armed forces. That doesn't necessarily matter though, but as the bomber was apparently a local Finnish born student it's very unlikely that this has anything to do with Middle East or Afghanistan. I have no idea about a possible motive, but hopefully that will be eventually found out. The purpose of the attack however was apparently to kill as many people as possible, since there was apparently lots of small fragments included in the bomb.

    More info:

The bomber was a 19 year old chemical student who apparently got instructions to make a bomb from internet. Police found from he's apartment documents, which are said to be related to bomb making. He also doesn't have any earlier criminal record according to police.

It certainly seems that way, with the numbers of active terrorists growing rapidly. I'm just waiting for someone here, claiming to be fighting for traditional Maori rights or something like that, to try and blow something up.

The Maori have been here since around 1000 or so. They near-eradicated another race when they arrived.
The Maori are far from oppressed. The problem is that many of them are caught in the poverty cycle, and a lot blame the crown and colonisation for that. The NZ government actually does a huge amount to sort out problems they have, but as in any situation there are a few who refuse to accept that.

Ok. Thanks. I was talking to my friends the other day about moving to a country where there is no native population to oppress. How many years does it take to make a population native?

(BTW I guess I am native to Sweden, since we have two native populations here (Saami and Viking descendants))

Dating? well... noone's ever shown any interest so haven't bothered to ask.. Sure I talk to girls, but that's about it. The ones I talk to are just friends. and booze too. Doesnt really help. Cause I have the habit of drinking myself out cold. Makes life bearable that way.

I think hypnosis would be good for me. You know, make me live in this dreamworld. Put me in a coma and so on. Never waking up.
