I'm still of the opinion that the best way to launch for mars, is from the ISS or the Moon,

i still can't fathom why its going to take us 14 years to get back to the moon, when it took less than 10 the first time.

The first thought I had when I saw that picture, is they're building the Phoenix .

It'll all be worth it if they blast "Magic Carpet Ride" out of the radio when they launch, won't it? ;)

The last time they had Stanley Kubrick. Now all we have is George Lucas and he has to wait for technology to catch up to his vision. :D

Yeah and I guess I wasn't the only one to catch the link to 2001 either...

Orion was the name of the PanAm ship coming up from Earth to the rotating space station wasn't it?

I actually think that, while the lack of a space plane is not good in the long term (do a search for "ballistic reentry," it's been discussed previously), for simply getting to the moon as cheaply as possible they're closer to the right track now.

I don't know if this was allready posted but they allready announced the logos. they almost look 70's retro. I think they could have done a better job, I am sure they will form a commette and it will take anouther 5 years to figure out.

Yeah, seems pretty standard to me, too.

Orion huh? I can already hear Richard Hoagland typing up another ten page conspiracy theory.

Cool. I havent been able to comment on this, but I feel really excited now that the balls have started rolling. Hopefully the avalanche will get even more ball rolling before it stops. :D
  • The Project Ares -emblem reminds me quite a lot of the US Marines -patch that the soldiers had on one of the Alien movies, was it? You know, the triangle with curved red, white and blue lines stretching from the bottom to the top of the triangle. I wasn't able to find a picture, although I know I've seen it somewhere...

    Oo, here we go:

And the one donned by Nasa in comparison...

Let's hope they don't bring back any aliens. At least, not any of those ones.

I'm just disappointed that they wold name it orion, but not build the real, 70's, nuclear explosion powered orion. Just imagine a ship weighing a few hundred thousand tons rising on a pillar of nuclear fire.... It could be an arms reduction program, as well.

Seriously, the projected cancer rates were very low. I say go for it. Way better than current chemical rockets.
