Mozilla Firebird

Just got it on my PoS comp, and am wondering WTH to do. I can add folders to this alleged "Bookmark Toolbar", but I see no option for adding simple links... I'm kind of afraid that if I fail to appease it with a sacrifice of maybe google.com or something, it might block all my ports, or crash my system, or something... it seems kind of smart, too damn smart. And there is now way that all those damned dividers can be up to any good... though the Google toolbar is nice. And why is this text box so small? Is Firebird trying to crush me as I type this? Can someone help me, before I revert back to IE, or something?

AND WHY CANT I SCROLL WITH MY CURSOR IN A TEXT BOX? I hate it already. I somehow managed to highlight text, but not overwrite it when I type... it just stays there, even as I write this.

I fear that by the time you get this, it may already be too late, and my desktop may be conquered by Mozilla and it's insatiable desire to be weird and divider-filled.

• There is now a new toolbar, with links to places I have been, and perhaps am... I think, at least, because the three I can see are all FirstOnes.com forums... prompt boxes look fugly, the scroll icon (when I press my middle mouse button) is too XP-ish and the fact that my cursor doesn't turn into an arrow is disorienting... and everything looks odd, almost painted on... the shadow colors on the edges of boxes are too light/dark, and it looks fake, or maybe sticking out too far. I fear this Escher-wannabe 2.5D Browser will be the death of me. And this ridiculously narrow text box.

Might I suggest waiting until you're using a real computer and trying again? :) ALl the things you claim to be unable to do, I can do fine.

Adding bookmarks: simple. Drag the address onto the toolbar. Instant bookmark.

Middle-mouse scroll thing: Why would you want to use that anywhere? Wheels are so much easier to use. :)

Things looking wrong is more likely due to your OS, since that's where it gets how to draw a lot of things like text boxes from.

To fix your toolbars, go to View|Toolbars|Customise, and drag buttons around and on and off toolbars, and drag toolbars around until you have it set up in a good way.

Seems everyone is telling me what browser I should use, but not actually using that browser... :p

[Edit]And what's the difference between the free version of Opera and the retail version?
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
One downloads and displays ads, one doesn't.

I'm not using IE. I'm using Firebird, because it's better. :)
• When it comes down to it, I prefer IE; Firebird doesn't add anything that's useful to me, and just doesn't feel right... so I guess I'll stay a purist :p

You like popups do you? Or badly formed HTML screwing up your computer? Or security leaks?
• IE = read any HTML,no matter how screwed up it is.

good for browsing, bad for coding. :D

That is IE's perk, that and the interface that is. otherwise,I'll take mozilla

IE=Internet Exposed

Or it should really be HSH=huge security hole.
I've had to clean up computers that were half full of spyware, malware and dialers because users had used IE. (last one those PC was in sunday)
And after cleaning and ten minutes use, there was again spyware in computer.

Normally I use Opera, if it doesn't work (because of crappy non-standard page) I'll change to Netscape. I use IE only as last resort.
IE doesn't even have pop-up blocker!
(In opera it's really easy and fast: File -> Quick preferences -> and select refuse pop-ups)

And in the course of years I've seen few cases where IE haven't worked with site when other browsers have worked with it.

If an user does have spyware and other malware in his or her computer, the problem is between keyboard and chair.

Mostly the problem is that user has not used WindowsUpdate at all. It does not matter what OS or browser you are using if it's outdated and security holes long known. So instead of blaming IE, install really old version of another browser and see how quickly the system is filled with malware. Of course not as quickly as with IE because IE is still the most popular browser and most malwares are designed for IE.

The point is, that if you keep all software up-to-date and use firewall and anti-virus softwares, you shouldn't have any problems. IE is a good browser and next version of IE already has a pop-up blocker, a feature I never use either in Firebird or Opera because it is pretty much useless for me. Perhaps that is because I don't surf on those warez and porn sites. :p

Personally I am currently using Opera, but as Firebird gets better, I will eventually move to use it.

Psst! See that thing called "Manage Bookmarks CTRL + B". Try using that. ;) Then you click file, select new, and select bookmark. (this is how it is in Mozilla, but I don't have Firebird since I actually use the mail client and its a smaller download to get it all in one package than seperately....ironically!)
I'm kind of afraid that if I fail to appease it with a sacrifice of maybe google.com or something, it might block all my ports, or crash my system, or something... it seems kind of smart, too damn smart.
Speaking of google, you can actually search google from Mozilla. :) Just type your search term in the location bar, and hit the down arror, then hit the enter key. (though you have to actually select Google in your preferences, but thats simple enough to do)
And why is this text box so small?
Because the text box wasn't coded properly and Kier didn't test it in anything other than IE. ;) If properly coded, it'll show up in the same size no matter what browser you use if it supports reading php.
Is Firebird trying to crush me as I type this?
Nah, it just takes a little time to get used to. Give it a couple of days. :)
AND WHY CANT I SCROLL WITH MY CURSOR IN A TEXT BOX? I hate it already. I somehow managed to highlight text, but not overwrite it when I type... it just stays there, even as I write this.
Click in the text box and use your mouse's wheel. :)

That's only part of the problem.

I'm blaming Microsoft because their programs leak like a sieve.
There wouldn't be need to search updates every day if those programs would have been made with security on mind.
Then those "dumb" basic users wouldn't be so exposed to viruses and others.

Also browser default settings should be better. ("overactive"X for example)
Also default settings in Outlook (for automatically activating viruses in attachments) were ridiculous.

Yeah, I'm downloading warez called Spybot.

• Bah, I posted about 8 times, but my PC apparently freezes if I use my right shift, which I am so used to using, that I don't even think about it. Long post short, popups are not an issue, takes all of a second to close one, they are rare on the sites I visit ... HTML works fine, plus it's best to test HTML in it, because so many people use IE ... finally, living with my family and never having gotten ANY spyware etc has convinced me that hackers fear me, or maybe worship me as a god. IE works fine, it does everything I want it to and nothing else, and it's unobstrusive. Firebird isn't actually that bad--I could probably get used to it--but I don't see any reason to. I'll keep it around just for the sake of ensuring browser compatability on anything I write, but that's about it. :)
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
IE is the worst one to test HTML in, because it doesn't actually prove your HTML is right. If a site works in Firebird or Mozilla or Opera, it will work anywhere.

And think of all the seconds you'll accumulate by not having to close popups.
• C_MonC_Mon A Genuine Sucker
I use Opera and I like it, so I won't change.
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
Good for you. Just so long as you arn't using IE. :)
• C_MonC_Mon A Genuine Sucker
Now I've tested Firebird for 1 hour and I'll stick with Opera.

I don't have a problem with the adds, I hardly even notice them. But I guess someone on a 56k connection might mind.

Mmm, it will WORK, but appearances (ie. interpretations of the code) can differ.. for example, the text box I am writing in is much smaller in Firebird for some reason. Most people use IE, so I want to make sure it looks right.

• I've been using Firebird since Biggles helped me set it up...

first time I used it I HATED it. I have to reorganize everything to suit me, and now I love it. :)

And I for one, NEVER had spyware/adware on my PC when using IE...until the day I made the stupid mistake of downloading a popup blocker that installed about 500,000 instances of it on my PC....
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
A browser is such a commonly used app that you become very comfortable with the one you're using and changing is very hard.

So far as I've seen, Opera is the only browser to do tabbed browsing correctly; that is, it uses tabbed browsing by default, and will only ever open an entirely new window when you specifically tell it to. That design choice alone would make Opera the best browser out there, even if it weren't for the mouse gesture support and the search box with lots and lots of search engines.

So why am I using IE?

One word: Compatibility.

I dream of the day when the majority of users have switched to Opera; then, maybe web pages will be designed to look good in it.
• AggamemnonAggamemnon Earthforce Officer
Well, I use Mozilla FB on my WinXP box, and Mozilla on my Linux box(es).

I never, ever, ever use IE, and I find that the interface and layout of Mozilla and FB much better than IE.

Why would I put myself through the pain of using Microshaft?
• Captain,SimmondsCaptain,Simmonds Trainee trainee
Mozilla FB works fine, Better then IE and netscape. I like the tab feature, which IE does not have. But one thing. I cant seem to change the Icon size.
