if i remember right, the 10th planet was already discovered by Douglas Adams, and named Bob.

Actually, it was called "Persphone" but was nicknamed "Rupert" after an astronomer's pet parrot.

10th? So they decided that Sedna (or however you spell that) wasn't a planet then?

Oh no! its Planet X and its going to hit the Earth!

    Sorry, couldn't resist ;)

the FCC declared that Planet X was indecent, and thus would not be permitted to hit the earth.

Or, if you prefer, Planets I through IX did so poorly at the box office, that the producers chose to pass on Planet X

that was it, Bob was worshiped by the people who ate the perfectly normal beast, Mostly Harmless was not my favorite as you can tell.

And then there is always the planet after 29 (after XXIX), since EntilZha seems to like the FCC so much. :p

yeah but there are a lot of items floating around in the kupier belt that could be considered planets.

was just reading an article in new scientist. apparently some astronomers think there could be up to 12 (i think) planets out past pluto that are bigger than pluto and mass as much as mars, but because they would only relfect starlight at such distances they would be incredibly hard to detect. all this is according to some new model of planetary formation and i forget the details, but basically when the planets formed there were way more of them than there are now. some were destroyed by collisions (like the one that created the moon), and most of the others were catapaulted either out of the solar system entirely, or at least out to the outer reaches, by gravitational slingshots that came about through near misses.

makes sense i suppose, but i'll wait and see

That reminds me of a certain set of lines from a certain movie:

    "Where are we going?"
    "Planet 10!"
    "When are we going?"
    "Real soon now!"

It's good news, though. I wonder how long it will take for the claims to surface that, like Pluto, it may not really be a planet after all.

Hey... If it's round, and has a moon of its very own, I say call it a planet.

    :p :D
