Internet now illegal

Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
Our government at work...just last week the quote was signed into law.

Story

But even better, if you read through all this, you realize that they have made the internet illegal. Not only that, but so is every operating system since the Apple IIe since every one of them can be networked!

Definition of Interactive Computer Service:
(2) Interactive computer service
The term “interactive computer service” means any information service, system, or access software provider that provides or enables computer access by multiple users to a computer server, including specifically a service or system that provides access to the Internet and such systems operated or services offered by libraries or educational institutions.
Any...system...that provides or enables computer access by multiple users to a server can include, but is not limited to:
a) Any operating system that includes a TCP/IP protocal.
b) Any drivers that allow operation of any computer-to-computer communication protocal
c) Any web browsers

Combine this with the following law:
(d) Sending or displaying offensive material to persons under 18
Whoever—
(1) in interstate or foreign communications knowingly—
(A) uses an interactive computer service to send to a specific person or persons under 18 years of age, or
(B) uses any interactive computer service to display in a manner available to a person under 18 years of age,
any comment, request, suggestion, proposal, image, or other communication that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards, sexual or excretory activities or organs, regardless of whether the user of such service placed the call or initiated the communication; or
(2) knowingly permits any telecommunications facility under such person’s control to be used for an activity prohibited by paragraph (1) with the intent that it be used for such activity,
shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both.
And you can decipher it to mean the following:
"Whoever in interstate or foreign communications knowingly uses an interactive computer service to send to a specific person or persons under 18 years of age any[thing sexually explicit...snipping this list] shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."

Given that there is porn on the internet, therefore any of the above noted technologies that enable access to the internet are illegal.

I don't live in the US, so I'm not subject to your laws. I can insult you all I like. :D
  • Actually, it looks like a poorly written law poorly designed to try and head off spammers or scumbags preying on children from hiding themselves by forging headers. That said, I wouldn't listen too closely to the ACLU, since they've been known to defend those same porno peddling, illegal drug scamming, bank account stealing spammers in the past.

Summary: poorly written law. VERY poorly.

    That said, I think you're adding 1 and 1 to get 37.

And that's just wrong. We all know that 1+1=42:eek:

The law here in sweden states that downloading anything copyrighted off the net is illegal. Since Googles logo is copyrighted, surfing onto the site is illegal..

Actually, it's even worse than that Messiah :)

According to international copyright law, anything written (artistic text - such as a news story, somebody's personal website, diary/blog, etc) is copyrighted. Therefore, even if there weren't images, you'd be in violation :D

I would have to believe that this would be a law that is so ambiguous as to great struck down as unconstitutional.

That said, I don't think RC is that far off, even the strictest reading of the paragraph 1 section B seems to indicate that an ISP, a server bank, websites, etc could be liable if any material that could be considered offensive gets into the hands of a minor. Since the internet itself is mearly a construction of all these points and that such data flows without restriction, it appears to make the internet illegal.

Something probably worth noting with copyright law is that if a copyright isn't defended, it's lost. Something along those lines. They're weird like that.
  • I've heard that, i heard it almost happened to Star Trek once, which prompted Paramount to begin to rigerously defend thier copyright.

Actually, it's trademarks which need to be defended in order to remain valid. Copyrights stick around for a prearranged period (something like seventy years or more).
