in Babylon 5
Yes that's right. CaptainHope has finally seen all of Babylon5.
BTW - I loved the last episode. Not really sure why, but I just loved it.
Now I'm going to go back over my thoughts as I watched season by season. Mainly just cause I feel like babbling about this really cool show, okay?
Season One - This season has taken alot of heat, but was it really that bad? No, [i] about[/i] the first five episodes were not thar great... But that's to be expected, most beginning episodes of a series are not that great.
But after the bumpy start season one was actually pretty good. About half-way through it grabbed me and did not let me go.
Season Two - This is the season that begins the major arc, although hints of the arc are already there in season one. However, if I had to say which season was better overall (out of seasons one and two) - I'd go with season one.
Season Three - Now this is the season (best out of all five as far as I am concerned). Unlike season two, which was a bit slow in places, season three blended all the various parts of the series nicely.
Season Four - After season three I was really looking forward to this season, but I must say I was rather dissappointed with it. It started off great, the problem was they rushed the Shadow war (I know the reasons why, so I understand), but once the Shadow war was over, everything else in season four just lagged. The Minbari civil war = Real boring. The Earth civil war, while it was better than the MCW it wasn't that much better. It just seemed to me that they were dragging this out way to long. If they were wanting to draw something out, I think they should have done it with the Shadow war and kept the civil wars shorter.
Now comes season five, generally dubbed the worst of Babylon5. I kinda have to disagree, with the exception of the hippie telepaths, I have enjoyed season five to a much greater extent than I have season four.
Now the loss of Ivanova was felt deeply... However, I really have liked the character of Elizabeth Lochley. Sure she was no Susan Ivanova, but she was damn good just the same. Also some mourned the loss of Marcus... But I felt Marcus death was handled very well, I loved his character but I did not find myself thinking season five could have been better with him.
Really the only thing I found myself not liking about season five was Byron, not really the character but the way he was handled. Once Lyta took over in Byrons roll I found myself truly enjoying that part of the telepath story. And find myself thinking it would have been better if they had offed Bryon sooner.
But the one thing I have truly felt was missing in season five: Londo and the Centauri struggles. I believe we should have seen more of this in season five, anyone that watched the series all the way through knew that something big was happening here, but we did not get to see enough of it. It was almost like they forgot about Londo and the Centauri until the very end of the series.
But after all is said and done I will truly miss Babylon5, and that is something that I cannot say about most Sci-Fi series these days.
I also want to note (while I'm babbling) that Babylon5 was the only series that really kept changing the characters and yet still managed to keep the ever changing characters the same characters that you knew and loved/hated.
For example; I loved Londo in the beginning, he was just so much fun. I disliked G'Kar because I felt he was somewhat shaddy (you couldn't trust him)... Then an interesting thing happened. Londo become the one that was shaddy and untrustworthy and G'Kar become the character that was all heart. It was an interesting moment of watching for me... Most of the time there are character changes of this scale - the series suffers because the changes aren't realistic or in some cases the actors cannot pull it off. But in Babylon5 the changes with Londo and G'Kar (and others) were completely believable. Even with large changes their basic character traits were left in place. BTW - if you are wondering I went back to loving Londo before the series ended.

My parents used to watch it with me too, sort of a family thing.
It was just me and mum when the last one came on...it was a sad hour, which felt like the end of part of my childhood (ok so I was 14 at the time...)

We`ll *still* be growing up as we watch Farscape;Andromeda;Legends of the Rangers, plus all the great shows swirling in the imaginations of producers & writers yet undiscovered.
I constantly thank my lucky stars to be living in an age where TV is still producing shows that stimulate & entertain.
Losing Ivanova and Marcus was hard, I didn't like it but had to accept it like everyone else. Lockley did a good job in Ivanovas bbots, but I don't think Marcus could ever have been replaced.
I found the bit with Byron is Season 5 a bit dull. He annoyed me.
As for Sleeping in Light, it was a very moving, sad episode... just listening to the music from the final episode brings the moment all back...
