Just a note to anyone who connects a DVD player through a VCR... There are different types of copy protection on DVDs that cause interference if the DVD player is connected to a VCR... most of the time you'll notice that the picture constantly fades from light to dark -- I think this is Macrovisions copy protection. It doesn't make the disc unwatchable, but it is kind of irritating at first.
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Yeah, Macrovision fluctuates the AGC signal, so the original has enough signal to display correctly, but any copy gets a severely tweeked AGC.

So, what you do then is you play your DVD to your Video card, and use the Composite, or S-Video cables to your VCR to record.

You can also fix this by sending the DVD or VCR output through a Monitor that has a video out of it's own. Typically the monitor's output signal has been fixed on it's way out.

Lastly a Video Processor unit or VCR that has a video gain/video level control can be used to compensate for weak levels.

Yay! I just checked Amazon, and according to the, the Region 1 DVD is a 2 disc set! Which means it won't have an LP style label on it, and I won't have to avoid touching both sides!

Sure, some may say filpping is better then switching disks, but I disagree. I bitterly hate the fact that my 2010 DVD has no label on it so I can filp it over and see the full frame version, which I will never watch.

I just found out that my copy of Region 1 is winging its way to me as we speak
I thought it was supposed to be a 4th December release but I should now get it in the next couple of days.

According to Amazon, the Region 2 version is due for release on 11 March, 2002 - so I may just have to buy this as well.
I can only play region 1 on my PC so I'll probably get a copy of the region 2 version as I would like to see it in all it's glory on my Sony 5.1 DVD and WEGA widescreen.

I just hope that the whole series are released on DVD as I'm only buying the region 1 version to help persuade the powers that be that the sales would be good enough.

Got it earlier today, and I save I've been quite happy with it. I'm glad that The Gathering was the special edition though they still didn't fix up enough CGI shots. IE station had cobra bays and then it doesn't and then it does again.

Also my player had no trouble playing it either, and its a region free player.

Just to mention something Biggles said about dual-layered discs:

The layers aren't interlaced. The top layer is semi-transparent so that the laser can focus through it onto the underlying layer.

As for the layer change, there usually a delay in moving from one layer to another, but there are a couple of things that can make the layer change shorter or almost nonexistent:

First of all the layer change time varies from player to player. Less expensive DVD players can have longer layer change times. Usually, the layer change causes a pause of only a fraction of a second...cheaper players can cause layer changes of up to 4 seconds, but that is rare.

Second, the type of layering will also affect layer change times. There are two types of layering: PTP and OTP. With PTP, or Parallel Track Path DVDs, both layers are read from the inside of the disc out...so when a layer change occurs, the laser must move from the outside of the disc to the inside before it can begin reading the second layer. PTP layers are useful for switching between layers (like for multi-angle features). With OTP, or Opposite Track Path DVDs, the outer layer reads from the center outward, while the second layer is read from the outside in. This makes changing layers almost seamless.

DVD authors are getting better at planning where a layer change occurs in films. Usually, they'll plan a layer change so that it occurs during a silent moment in a film, when there's very little motion, or between scenes (like during a fade-to-black), instead of right in the middle of an action sequence.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
They arn't interlaced? OK. That was something I read when they were still developing DVD's and hadn't bothered to check up on.

Shrek's layer change is quite visible on the DVD drives I've used it in (and Asus 8x and a Pioneer 16x). It's just after the Robin Hood scene, in between the scenes. So there's a pause of about half a second on both drives as the next scene begins.

Got up this morning to find that the postie had delivered a nice jiffy bag containing my copy of the B5 DVD.

I live in the UK but no region coding was going to put me off purchasing this one.

First off - I have never seen a DVD with so many stickers over it - including two huge clear 'anti theft' stickers covering the edges. Now, I don't know about you but if I was going to procure a DVD by illegal means, then I would not be put off by two perforated easy peel stickers.

Anyway, like others here I got a two sided disc - which I don't particularly like, but you get what you can. We’re denied a couple of cool pictures using this method, but what I dislike about the LP style discs is it's so damn hard to decipher which side is which.
It's only the fact that 'In the Beginning' is in widescreen and that they printed widescreen in red that I could quickly choose the side I wanted.

However my biggest fear came to fruition, as WB has as usual put this all inside their favourite cardboard case. I know that it might save them a small amount, but I for one hate these boxes and would gladly have paid the extra few pence (cents) for a proper plastic DVD case.

Don’t get me wrong, this DVD is an essential purchase for the B5 enthusiast – although it’s far off from being a great overall package. However, it is after all B5, and thus, should be put with pride of place on your mantelpiece.

Even if you have it on VHS like myself and don't live in region 1 - BUY IT.
It's our best hope for the whole series being produced on DVD. And this is surly what we are all hoping for.

I can’t wait for the region 2 version to come out in March.

That's interesting, Biggles... the Shrek DVD layer change for me was barely noticeable--I have a Sony player, and they've always been pretty good about handling layer changes.

As for the "security" stickers on DVDs, those are mainly useful when a DVD is sold via a retail outlet--it makes them harder to open, becuase many people who steal DVDs from retail stores just pop open the case and take only the DVD, since the magnetic strip in the case would set off alarms.

The security stickers make it more difficult to do get the disc out of the case. The anti-theft stickers do deter people from stealing the DVDs because the longer it takes to open the package, the more likely it is that they'll get caught.

And while the stickers don't really mean much when a DVD is ordered online, there's really no reason not to put them on.
• CactusheadCactushead Earthforce Officer beyond the rim
You mean you can purchase DVD's from places other than the internet - interesting

I realise they're intended for security in retail outlets but surly making them perforated stickers makes it almost as easy for thief’s. Pick up DVD - pretend to be reading the synopsis on the back whilst moving your nail along those perforated edges and then remove. Why go to the trouble and cost of making the stickers and placing them on the DVD’s if you’re going to perforate them? Just seems a bit strange to me!

Not that I now shop anywhere other than the internet for these sorts of items but it just seems so inadequate and a waste of effort. It'd be interesting to see if this sort of protection actually manages to deter and reduce theft - especially as most items would have magnetic security devices and guards at all the exits anyway.

The only system I've seen that seems to sort of work is the special plastic security enclosures on CD's at Virgin which need to be placed in a magnetic device to release the actual CD case.

I realise that any measure to stop thieves is welcomed by the retailer and consumer, and that extending the time taken to remove items from their packaging is helpful as a deterrent.
But although it may put off your casual thief who'll do it for a dare, I just wonder how many professional shop lifters would actually be put off.

Does anyone here work in a retail outlet and can shine some light on the usefulness of this method of security?

Anyway why am I on the forums when I could be watching the DVD? - bye

Not on the one I got, it was very soft - almost rubbery plastic - a sort of stealth coating.
I know the type of stuff you’re talking about though, as I've had many DVD's with that type of coating and apart from being noisy they don't want to rip – quite often making me have to get a pair of scissors to open them.
I can see a point on those ones but the ones on my B5 DVD were not at all like those - not that I really care, just curious as I'd never seen this type of security sticker before.

Of course we could have been talking about different types of stickers all this time as they could have been packaged differently in the first place.
