NASA planning to de-orbit ISS

WORFWORF The Burninator
They're planning to bring it down in early 2016. If it goes ahead, what was the whole point of building the thing?

The article talks about the political pressure from other countries to keep it running, so hopefully that will work and the station won't get destroyed.

Well, the article said what the point was, to keep Russian scientists from going rogue. :D

For the same reason the Space Shuttle was built, to keep 30,000 Nasa engineers from going rogue after the Apollo program was cancelled.

I do agree that they should keep it up there for as long as possible though. The Hubble telescope is a prime example how retrofitting can put additional life into a project of that scope.

In the end it's just a matter of money, because we are not done learning stuff. I also believe there should be a station between the Earth and the Moon once they return to it.

Is it just me or has it become very quiet around the civilian spaceship missions? Virgin Galactic anyone? It's the economy, I guess.

It was built to make dozen of Congressman's districts happy. It was built to spend money.

Well, the upside is that the spending of money has continued to generate jobs. The lovely thing about space exploration is that spending on space keeps the vast majority of the money here on Earth. Unfortunately, too few people recognize this.

Btw, do NASA got a new logo in addition to new administrators? Check upper left corner. (Maybe it is there because of Apollo celebration?)

I don't thik they will deorbit. They might build newer sections and de orbit the older sections. They need rotating sections!!!
