A B5 Empire PBEM game

RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
I have done two PBEM (play by email) B5 games in the past and I am thinking about starting another one up. This time, I will have time to devote to it (unlike the first two). However, I am not going to do it unless I have at least 7 people who would like to play. The basic idea goes like this:

You chose a race from B5 to be its leader. You are able to build ships, expand, go to war, do all that good stuff. You can form alliances, ect.
I need to know, though, what you think. Should the game follow the B5 storyline or should it just start with B5 races/ships and let the players decide (I am partial to the second choice)? And also, should I allow more that one person to play a race (as different empires, but use the same ships)? Please post if you are interested or/and if you have questions.

• I have no questions, nor am I particularly interested, but I will respond just out of courtesy.
Personally, I think it would be best if it were just set in the B5 universe, so that the players could deceide what to do. Also, allowing more than one person to control a particular race it interesting.

Oh, wait. I do have a question!
How will this work? Is it like a role-playing game or will it actually involve some graphics?

Cherio.

Thanks for the reply. It will work without any graphics accept for a map. I really dont know how graphics could be put in. Its not really an RPG, it is more like a stratagy game.
• did u though in a web based strategy game, maybe with some rpg?.

Sorry, can you rephrase your question? If you mean were ther some RPG elements, yes. Not too many though. Some ships fought better under different circumstances (i.e. ships defending a HW would get a major boost in effectiveness). Also, some ships had the possibility to become "Heroes" but the game never got that far.

*BIG BUMP*

Ok, as it will soon be a new year, I am looking for people who would be interested in playing this type of game (a empire building stratagy type game). I am really in need of players, and trust me, once things get going it will be fun. Check out the site here.

Hmm - the post must have failed. I tried to post here yesterday.

Anyway:

Will diplomacy between players be possible?

What are the winning conditions, and can there be more than one winner?

Can ships be given orders more specific than movement?

Can combat be controlled / affected by player choices? as an example: I send a strike force against an enemy base. Can I focus that attack on the base/colony/jumpgate itself - resulting in the loss of my fleet, but the destruction of a strategically important target.

Do capital ships require a jump gate for "out of system" travel? Many are capable of producing their own jump point.

Is the map on the site going to be the final version? I might have some ideas to change it a bit.
Oh - and what way do scanners / hyperspace probes work to find out enemy locations?

One more thing: Is the result of combat calculated only from the sum of combat ratings, or do other factors affect it?

Good questions. Here are the answers:
Q. Will diplomacy between players be possible?
A. By all means yes. Players are free to form packs (mutual defense, alliances, ect.), hold discussions, hold major meetings, form Alliances, and anything else they feel like doing. They can do this without my knowledge for the most part, but if you let me know, certain perks may be given (such as a private forum). Also, players can ask for an additional "Tag" under their name letting players know they belong to a certain alliance.

Q. What are the winning conditions, and can there be more than one winner?
A. There are no real winning conditions. This will be a largely freeform game, where players have total control over their races goals. However, if one race becomes massively powerful they will become a firstone race and go partially beyond the rim. They will still be able to interact with the current universe, or they can start up as a new race.

Q.Can ships be given orders more specific than movement?
A. Yes. They can be told to explore areas, attack specific ships, defend planets or stations, escort, or any other order the player comes up with (within reason). Planetary bombardment will also be allowed, but other races dont take likely to the massacre of civilians.

Q. Can combat be controlled / affected by player choices? as an example: I send a strike force against an enemy base. Can I focus that attack on the base/colony/jumpgate itself - resulting in the loss of my fleet, but the destruction of a strategically important target.
A. Yes, as stated above. However, you may suffer more casualties be focusing onone target and largely ignoring a stations defenses. One other risk is that it will be possible for fleets to refuse orders. In your example, forces would be more likely to go down fighting then to blow up the Jumpgate on your orders. Most commanders do not want to commit suicide.

Q. Do capital ships require a jump gate for "out of system" travel? Many are capable of producing their own jump point.
A. Good question. For the purpose of the game, Jumpgates are not required for cruisers and other capital ships. However, without a jumpgate, no fighters can be used for out of system attacks, and no trade routes can be built.

Q. Is the map on the site going to be the final version? I might have some ideas to change it a bit.
A. No. There will still be some major changes before the starting game version is put up. However, I am open to suggestions.

Q. Oh - and what way do scanners / hyperspace probes work to find out enemy locations?
A. Probes will seek out any forces/colonies/lifeforms in the area. Most of the time probes can get away without the enemy noticing. They are also more effective the sending a fleet to investigate. They allow you to scout your enemies without there knowledge, unless they get lucky...

Q. Is the result of combat calculated only from the sum of combat ratings, or do other factors affect it?
A. Other factors do effect it. If an enemy is demorilized or has take major losses recently, a smaller force may be able to rout the enemy. On the fliup side, all forces fighting in a last ditch attemp, or fighting to save a homeworld will have a "moral boost" (meaning they will fight more effeciantly and inflict more damage). Any ships defending civilians will get a small bonus.

I hope this answers you questions. I will be offline for a while in the coming week, but feel free to post more.
