• Saw it. Loved it. There are things I could complain about (motion generation in some of the CGI, IMHO unnecessary story deviations) but they are trivial.

This movie sets a high standard for the other two to match; luckily they are already filmed and pre/post is being done by the same team.

If NZ really looks like that, well, our NZ friends have something to really smile about. That scenery was breathtaking. Those were some grand-teton class mountains. Ooh rah!

I have a new addition to my "must visit before I die" places. (To the NZ FOs) Would an outsider be able to find or get to those (mountainous) places? (without a private helicopter-class budget)

I'll redundantly say it again: wow, what scenery!

Hah! You are not the only one. I was a bit annoyed by this appearance. For a few moments, I was stuck pondering this, then I went on with my life and watched the film again.

Armed with my Popcorn Tub (More like a tank) and a large soda, I sat down and watched the film. I must say, it was amazing. The story is unlike almost any movie out. It grips you, the viewer, and pulls you in, makes you wonder what will happen to your beloved characters--scratch that, friends. You really begin to understand and love these characters.

One of the things that really came out in this film was how the characters were all fleshed out in so much detail during the three hours. You have the members of the fellowship, which would be proper, but more than that, many supporting characters. You really do get to see into the minds of many of them. This is a feat few movies attempt, and even less pull off. It really made me care for the characters.

Now, the demon! That was a beast! It was simply stunning. The buildup was amazing. You see a picture some time before, just an image of two eyes, a shadow, and some flames. Not soon after, you see a corridor with an amber light growing brighter each second. I feared for the characters as this horrible beast was finally seen.

And the scenery! Wow! I never knew NZ was so beautiful! Now I really must get down there and snap some photos. It just seems like such a nice area.

Now, the music is another great aspect. It merged perfectly with the image on the screen.

The sound processing was another great aspect of the film. The screeches from the nine were disturbing, and peirced the skull. When you heard it, you worried. You were shocked and scared. The sounds of the various creatures were very well done, too. Everything had a sound proper for its form.

Yet another thing I was quite fond of was the scaling of the characters. The Hobbits truly did look like they were as high (short?) as they should have been. The monsters were also quite threateningly large. It was just perfect.

I think I'll end my post here. I'm quite tired.

Ah, so you have the same complaint as pretty much every critic and person who's seen the movie? The only major flaw is that it is a year before you get to see the next one. The thing I really liked about the ending was that Jackson managed to convey the sense of loss even better than Tolkein did. As I said, I was in tears by the end (it seems that even at 5:30AM after watching the movie 1.5 times I'm not too tired to cry).

All those who've asked: Yes, New Zealand really does look like that. Yes, you can get to all of it easily and cheaply. Yes, I'll take you on a tour if you come.

Its an excellent film, but not the BEST film ever!!

That would have to be something like True Romance or Usually suspects.

I have seen better!
• ZosoliasZosolias Earthforce Officer
Well JJ, I suppose it all depends on your taste. LOTR may not be the best film ever, but for my taste it's certainly better than the two films you suggest.
LOTR is a classic and will likely be remembered long after those others.
Consider the Wizard of Oz. Probably not one of your favorites, and yet it is still around and a favorite with today's kids of all ages, even more than 50 years after it's release. LOTR has that kind of potential.
I don't know if you can say the same for True Romance or Usual Suspects.
Still, it's all a matter of taste, isn't it?

My list of top can't really be ordered... I enjoy the movies on different levels. But here they are in no particular order (except Lotr is first cause it's on my mind first and foremost right about now )

Lord of the Rings
Full Metal Jacket
The Shinning
A Clockwork Orange
The Wall
The Muppet Movie (first one, not the later knock-offs) (I can't help it, Jim Henson was a comic genius )
The Truman Show
Clerks (probably mainly because I work in a convenience store)

Favorite TV shows would have to be Babylon 5,Frasier, Simpsons.... few others I enjoy. Mostly comedies...

And PS, I feel really weird sitting here posting on X-mas day, but all my family stuff was yesterday, and all my friends family stuff is today, so I have nowhere else to be . Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers 364 days and counting...
Hi all....new guy here. Just got the B5 DVD and have been checking around on the web for more B5 stuff. Anyway, on to my response to the above quote.

Yeah, the time sense was a bit off. For those who haven't read the book, it will seem to be a quick day-journey from the Shire to Rivendell. No biggie though.

As for Anduril, if you look closely, you'll notice that the hilt of the sword that Aragorn uses is the same throughout the movie, before and after Rivendell. Anduril will presumeably be reforged later and brought to him somehow along the lines of the banner of Gondor in the book. That's my best guess, but he definitely doesn't use Anduril later in the movie. When I first saw the film, I was wondering the same thing - where's Anduril? Did I miss the reforging? I saw it a second time 16 hours later, and specifically checked the hilt design, and the broken bits are smoother and a fairly uniform steel color, whereas the sword Aragorn uses through the film has a black hilt and engraving.

I, too was waiting for "Bring forth the Ring...Mr. Anderson."

Also, from a few other places I've seen, the gift-giving at Lothlorien was filmed , but cut. It's been said that it will be restored to the DVD release, as well as several other scenes (no Tom Bombadil - those scenes were never filmed and I believe was one of the first things cut from the scriptwriting)
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Tom Bombadil was cut from the scriptwriting because they knew it was not important to the story and would add at least an extra half an hour to the movie. The gift giving, on the other hand, you can clearly see from the movie it was filmed but cut to keep the movie under 3 hours.

I want to like it...
I really do...
The scenery is stunning, the sets are spot-on, and the costuming had better win the Oscar.

I understand that things had to be changed: this is a film and not a book, etc.

But they changed the characters motivation. Change their names, change their looks, but not their motivation!

In the book, Frodo and Sam have a love based on respect for each others, first from their respective social positions, but later from their shared experiences. But in the movies, their buddies!

And Saruaman, a servant of Sauron?!?! NO! he wants to BE the new Dark Lord, he would never serve Sauron!

I was saddened to see the stay in Lothlorien shortened. The relation between Gimli and Legolas really under went a major change there. I guess that won't be played out in the movies.

As a film, FOTR it is an expertly crafted film. I only have the best wishes for it. But it has, for better or worse, replaced a large part of the heart of the books.

I'm looking forward to the director's cut DVD, sure to be over 10 hours!

That is shown in the FotR. He tells the orcs that one of the halflings carries something very precious to him. Remember that Saruman was not actually shown in the books until book 3. I'm sure we'll see much more of his motivation in the next film.

I was also dissapointed about that. The relationship between Legolas and Gimli is an important part of the changing of the relationship between elves and drawves, in fact it is the reason for it.

***Spoilers for those who havent read the books***

So was I. I wonder how it will work. Actually, they see Sauraman in the second book, when they destroy Isengaurd. I think that Saruman is working fairly similarly to what he did in the book. He tells Gandalf he wants him (Gandalf) to help him (Sauron) like he (Saruman) has. If you can understand that, congradulations What I mean is that Saruman tells Gandalf he wants to help Sauron, but Gandalf sees through that and realizes he lusts for the ring and has for a while (the past 30 odd years). You will notice in the movie that Saruman demands that the Urak Hai bring the Hobbits to him, not Sauron. Hopefully this makes sense...

Ok. I understand what you are saying. I saw LOTR again, it was better a second time. Saw the B5 Legend of the Rangers trailer, it was cool. Very similar to the one on Sci-fi channel (if not the same). Cant wait for the day it comes out. I am supprised that Sci-Fi would air a trailer for a TV movie, to my knowledge, this has never happened (although I am sure it has, but I dont know about it). I wonder how the relationship between Legolas and Gimli will be showed, because it was a great revalation in the books.

There is also the scene where Saruman says: Who do you serve. And the Uruk-Hai respond with: Saruman.
That would also indicate that Saruman acts out of his own ambitions, and not his will to serve Sauron.
I truly hope we will see more of this in the second movie.

As for the relationship between Legolas and Gimli, there is plenty of time for that in the second and third film (I hope)

The more I think of it, I think that they should have chopped it up into 6 movies, one for each book instead of for each volume. Make them each about 2 hours long, and release them every 6-8 months. Would have allowed them to keep almost everything in, and destroyed the chief complaint I hear from non-Tolkien fans that it's just too long.
