• Did you guys even read the info on this site?

It sounds like a beefed up Neighborhood Watch program with a Disaster Responce Program and civilian volunteers to take some pressure of local police departments in the area of non-inforcement(NYC has had a uniformed Police volunteer group for quite some time and they helped me out a number of times), and as a former Police Officer it sounds good to me.

People need to be more involved in there own neighborhoods.

Living out in California right now, as I drive to work or to the store, I see how dry the environment is right now. Much worse than normal. I'm suprised that more fires haven't started than have already occured in my area.

I've been watching the fire department and CHP/Sherrif employees rally keeping their eyes out for suspicious activity.

Some people are oblivious to it, but I can see it. I for one am glad that they are butting into business that they otherwise wouldn't have if 9/11 hadn't occured.

The current threats to the US from terrorism aren't trivial, but I fear the self-destructive, internal threats from our own citizens who are growing up with no consideration for others or the environment we all must live in.

Let people watch, and in turn watch them also, so that together we don't let anything slip by us.

It's a good thing we have people like you guys around. You're annoying at times like this, but should Bush *really* ever try to take over the world I'm sure I'll hear it first from you guys

theres always a fine line between freedom and security... for me.... if some puts thier nose into my business... as long as they have sufficent grounds to think I'm up to no good then cool... I appreciate it. We should all take a more active role in our society and still keep our privacy.

It's when people turn a blind eye, or walk the other way that we end up with trouble.

I personally have stepped up to a bunch of arseholes beating the shit out of a complete stranger. (It always pays to sound like a complete psycho as you fly in.. )

I nailed a couple of would be thieves by staking the tyres on the station wagon they were loading half a households worth of good into... and then calling the cops.

I've also fogotten how many times I've lent jerry cans, tools, torches, jump starts, tows and lifts somewhere.

Volunteers and community minded people are like gold.

I just fear the old 'shes a witch' syndrome.

First, they must succeed in recruiting people from all of your nations populations.

There is no problem with anyone having suspicions about someone else being a terrorist, as long as that person doesnt take the law in his/her own hands. This organisation might make that easier. Easier to shift blame on 'the others', easier to get support.

Im talking mostly about the citizen watch program, which will incorporate terrorism prevention.

  • Yeah...reading a little more about it makes it sound like CrimeStoppers, Neighborhood Watch and a bunch of community programs rolled into one heading. I feel a little more easy about it now...as long as its not in disguise.

The disaster preparation and action program that I'm a citizen member of is thinking of switching to fall under that program. We've been researching it and it looks harmless. There is little government tracking or involvement, the money trail is next to nothing, so there is no way the fed. can pull strings to get us to do it "their way". There is only a loose relationship with public safety and law enforcement, but if there weren’t then what the heck would be the point? It's no worse/better than the old civil defense programs and others. Complaining about his is like say habitat for humanity is an evil government plot. The UK and Sweden have the same and even more government involved programs.

Rambie: Utah benefits from citizen corps and the disaster program I'm a member of so what would you have me do?

    Errr...

I live in sweden, and Ive never heard of anything like it. True, we have volunteer fire dept. but nothing in the means of crime stopping and terrorist sniffing.

No? What about: Grannsamverkan in Linköping? "Samverkan mot brott"? "Operation Samverkan" in Barhäll? Or Västerortsprojektet in Stockholm?

Hehe. Ok, so there are some small projects in those cities, come to think of it, we have 'föräldrar på stan' in my old hometown Varberg, which literally means parents in the city (they walk around saturday nights just making sure there are adults on the streets), but nothing thats government involved. And I still have not heard anything about government involvement here.

edit: did a lookup on the västerortsprojektet, and yes, they were cooperating with the police. Mostly crime prevention and fireworks prevention (yes, firecrackers are nowadays illegal).

I still do not like the idea of amateurs sniffing out terrorist suspects. In a worst case scenario, it could have severe consequences in the arab communities.

Hahaha So funny yet so true.

Not to be insultive, it's easy sitting across the sea and dis someone else but GWB really isn't best material for a president. To say the least. Seeing his stamp on the site is what worries me more than the content of the site itself. It's quite allright that a people unite and stand together against crime and terror. They just have to be careful so we won't end up with witchburnings as we did so many years ago. The only good thing that ever came out of that is an annual witchday (drink beer and lots of it).

As stated above, Sweden and England and other countries including my own, Denmark, also have homebrewed systems to prevent crime and the likes. I say coool! But it as long as common sence rules it will be for the better if not it's pretty bad.

It only takes one idiot coming up with a logo like that or "chaning the rules" a little to screw up a perfectly good program. VIVA REVOLUTION!!!

As for Bush, find a new target you guys, we have a three pronged goverment that balances power nicely. That and he's got a higher IQ than the majority. I could start attacking Queen Margrethe II or Prime Minister Rasmussen of Denmark just as easily, and be just as lame.

(I feel this is zocolo bound, i'm amazed we got away with it this long.)

See though how you made the immediate jump between Terrorists and Arab communities.

When I think of terrorists, I think of all who act as a terrorist. First person that comes to my mind isn't Osama, but Timothy M. and the unibomber... Both White, and both American citizens who went sour...

I'm quite aware of how the US is hated by many Muslim and Arab groups, but we have our own internal threats to worry about, and I sure as hell don't group everyone into their way of thinking, Arab or otherwise.

I made that jump bacause many of my arab friends have gotten into strange scenarios of terrorist accusations.

I am happy to see that you did not make that jump, but it comes naturally to me because of whats happened to my friends.

I can understand that Messiah, really... but by doing that you have basically done to me and others here, what you are complaining about being done to you and your friends, and that is generalizing that I and others like me see Arab as equal to Terrorist.

There really are informed people that exist and live in the US, although I must agree that I have seen my share of the ignorant, and they seem to be multiplying...

I don't think he was aiming it at you or people on this board. Like you said, ignorant people are multiplying. Ignorant people will go into this scheme. Hence the "nightwatch" will run around leaping to conclusions and basically making life miserable for people who don't deserve it at all.

I was not accusing anyone. And I did say worst case scenario. Sorry if anyone took it the wrong way.

Ive been to the US twice, and I know and love a lot of people over there. I do know that there are informed, intelligent people living in the states (sorry if you thought otherwise) but Í sometimes hate the way your government acts, and that sometimes carry over to conversations when it should not.

Just had to say that, so when I vent myself over something wrong Ive seen or heard, the people I care for on this board do not take it the wrong way.

I would not have stayed as long on this board as I have, had I not really liked this lot . These are troubling times, and sometimes the kettle boils over. Sorry.

  • Have you ever thought asked yourself why someone would need an organization like this to help defend the society against crime and terrorism?

If I saw someone committing a crime, then I would call the police. I can do that without such an organization. So, what's the purpose?

(Messiah, there are a lot of people who have been visited by the police and getting their data into police and secret service databases just because they are of the 'right' age, of muslim religion or Arabian origin, and studying at a university, in Germany too. I find that disgusting, and I understand your point.)

Right, this program just sounds a little scary especially this part:

"Information received will be entered into the national database and referred electronically to a point of contact in each state as appropriate."

So, what happens to the people reported to this TIPS program?

I'm not against people being more watchful, I myself have been since 9/11 too. But I don't want to see this country fall back into witch-hunting Salem style.

I wasn't alive at the time, but I've studied history. Anyone remember the McCarthy trials? How far from that is this TIPS program.

The ideals of the program are good, as Citizens we need to ensure the program doesn't turn into a McCarthy style witch hunt.

Here's another review of the program: http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/198/editorials/Ashcroft_vs_Americans+.shtml
