hard*ah ah ah* drive

Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
So... How does one install another harddrive so they'll work?

I have on that works. Tried putting a "slave" due to some reasons. Well, plugged in, bios didn't recognise either one of them. Played with the cords, bios recognised the other one, the one that was supposed to be the slave. Played with the cords again, bios recognised the old one but wouldn't let the comp work. so... any hints?

Call the guys from Poltergeist?

    Proper order-
Master at the end of the cable
    Slave in the next plug

In theory they don't have to be that way unless you have them on cable select, but I am paranoid.

Double check your jumper settings, esp on the new drive.

If you still can't get it to go, you might have either a bad IDE cable or the new hard drive is bad. Replace the cable and try again.

    Check..

oh well... i'll check it again later, after i've rested.
  • All of the above except use CS on each drive...

    That works sometimes...

    Depends on the BIOS

Make sure the old drive is set to master.

CS only works if you have a CS cable. Those have a notch in the #1 wire between the IDE drive connectors.

If all else fails, try putting the second drive on the secondary IDE channel.

It doesn't work because you probably didn't set the jumpers correctly or you stuck a seagate brand IDE drive in the same chain with another brand. (Seagate is famous for not being compatable with different brands on the same IDE chain.)

Leave your current drive set to master. Set the other drive to slave. The order on the cable does not matter. Make sure the pin 1 connector is connected on the side of the interface that is nearest to the power connector and that its inserted all the way.

If you still have problems, then its with the drive itself.

Avoid CS like the plague it is. Set your jumper settings on each drive explicitly.

If you're looking for "how to install a hard drive", try here. Failing that, try google.

Hell, read the damn documentation that came with the drive! It goes step by step!

correct Biggles... but if one buys a HFS formatted disc ( or whatever the equivalent is now, it been a long time since I've run out of HD ), it means that its been built to work with Macs... and with Macs it will work, no question.

the benefits of very tight hardware architecture controls... you build something for Mac... you build it right first time. Much less crap to deal with with installs etc.

    Ok...several things to check:

    - How large a drive and how old a system.

Some drives may have problems being recognized by older bioses (say, 3 or so years old). What brand drive is it? The maxtor 80GB that I recently installed on my dads computer was not recognized by bios. It came with a setup disk (that was very bugged!). But you had to run the setup AFTER the drive was installed. What you have to do is take the Bios off of AUTO detection - that is what freezes older Bioses and then run the setup disk.

    - If you get the drive recognized, and the OS still doesn't find it, what OS?

Some OS's don't support larger drives (I think you have to have Win98 OSR2 in order to recognized drive partitions over 60GBs in the Windows series).

    - Check the jumpers.

They should probably be set on Cable Select. But if you are having problems, use the Master/Slave positions. If you have an older Bios, you may have to select a lower cylinder limit jumper position and use software to bypass this limit (yes, you can do that on your primary drive). DO NOT BELIEVE MANUALS! Go online to google. Using the companies web page do a serch as follows: site:{CompanyWWWSite} {drive model} - this will get you the data on the actual drive. Most manuals are GENERIC and not updated for every drive change - your jumpers have a 99% chance of being different then they were in the manual! Make sure you use the actuall model number off the HD not the box.

    - Last resort: Go SCSI
  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The best place to find the correct jumper settings is the drive itself. If the drive doesn't have them printed on it, it's a piece of shit drive. All good drives have the jumper settings somewhere on them.

    I'm with Biggles here.

It also pays to keep in mind that the jumper schematic on the drive itself can also be printed upside down. Pay extra attention to the sides with the "extra" pin. The single one. I had a fun time with my drives too, until I noticed that the single pin was on the "right" side.

    pff. hush you fool.

Point 1. My mom wouldn't even know how to start a computer, if i hadn't written "press here" on the power button.

Point 2. I've never had any chicken shit clone comps. These have been made from scratch by others. and there's never been any manuals for the hardware of any of the ****ing components given to me.

Point 3. Got the shit working, by ripping out the IDE cable from another comp, and putting it to mine. Cause they (hd's) didn't seem to like each other in the same IDE.

    So foobar to you.

More likely it is as Lord Refa said, and the hard drives don't like being together. That happens occasionally. They just refuse to coexist on the same cable.
