I want my house to be covered in that!

  • of course...if it can be done to a tank, it can be done to a body suit...

If it can be done to a tank, it can be done to an ICBM

Nice, but I don't understand how exactly that camouflage would work. How would those nano-thingies know which colour they should have on in any given time and how are they supposed do that?

    B. They would have to be painted somehow - either they would all have a different color and just be arranged in a certain pattern, or they would have small panels with different colors on them that could be exposed based on what color they need to show..or if they were REALLY small, you could have one red, another green, and another blue...

...why would it matter on an ICBM exactly..?

It's not like you can hide the exhaust, and the missle is in a silo somewhere..or hiding in a grain elevator (I swear that some of those things have nukes in em and not corn)... you might use it on short range rockets however.

Of course, the next step from a tank is to aircraft and ships...imagine a stealth ship with that kind of tech on it...or an aircraft for that matter.

Pretty cool stuff...although I see a LOT of potential problems along the way.

There are a lot of problems with any new technology though.

I'll believe it when I see it. I think the first hurdle is making nano-bots in sufficient numbers, at the moment as far as I'm aware they are horrendously expensive to manuacture. I guess we need self replicating nano-bots first.

On the camo deal... that's pretty heavy stuff, it took mother nature millions of years to engineer that into squid and chameleons etc. Replicating chromatophores is no easy task, though I guess it's possible, controlling them en-masse is the next trick. Squid do it with muscular contaction/tiny electrical charges through nerves. Such a delicate system would not be good on the exterior of a tank. A chromataphore is basically a disc shaped structure with a sphincter type muscle at its margins which squeeze it up like a drawstring purse, thereby changing the size of the 'pixel' concerned, thereby altering the percieved colour of the squids skin. They have a fairly limited colour range too, though I guess tanks dont need to be pink and duck egg blue too often. ( Though it would be funny to watch this tank cruise past your average shopping district and watch the paint try an cope with all the visual pollution, ie completely shit itself )

Suffice to say I think its a fairly long way off.

You create a class of Nano-bots that can create other Nano-bots to specification, then production becomes easy.

Pretty much. Go read Bill Joy's article in Wired about it, or listen to his speech.
