They hit an artillery shell in flight, what else do you want, them to roast chicken from 500 miles away?

THat would be too handy.

Call the 800 number...

All of a sudden, a satellite in orbit fires a laser at your chicken, sitting in its government-designed roasting unit, cooking it to near perfection.

LOL

Probably over cooking it so you can't sue the government for food poisoning

Why are you being such a pessimist? I think it's terrific, next time there's an armed conflict maybe someone can station those around civilian regions to reduce collateral damage

• ... or, given the huge cost of such systems, keep them around the valuable military hardware they were initially designed to protect

That's not to say such systems wouldn't be handy for use in defending clearly demarcated civillian zones; but the military would get first dibs on cover, I'd imagine.

Ever the pessimist...

Seems a great way for a 3rd party to guarentee a demilitarized zone...
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Even better than them roasting your chicken for you: the satellite could just fire off a chicken. Let reentry cook it.

So, when to the lunar light shows start? I want to know when to prop up a chair in my back yard to watch
• You know, that would be really cool, espcially during a new moon..would take some pretty high powered lasers tho...and it's probably not a good idea to turn the surface of the moon into glass if we can help it.

You know that it seems that this would be a much better weapon for the missle defence sheild than the interceptor missles they are trying to use. If the missle misses, too bad, but if this one misses, well just retrangulate and fire again....

• Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
I agree.

BTW, what was the movie where they showed lasers on fighters jets (I think it was to shoot down asteroids)? As I recall that movie said that that "they were developed to shoot down missiles."

I see reality reaching the movies...again

• Yes, it is, but see...as light travels through a medium, like, say, the atomosphere, it gets diffused...which means the laser is less effective. Right now, they can't get through it with enough consistancy to make it a reliable means of defense. That and the further away the warhead is from the laser, that much more atomosphere you have to fire through (line of sight)..so unless the missle happend to be direcly overhead, it's even harder. Now, if you mounted them on sats, then the whole equation changes.

Thus we have come full circle back to the chicken frying debate...
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Well I think there is a market for roast-chicken-on-demand-from-above.

We'll have to try that...I wonder how aerodynamic a suitcase bomb is...

Well, with enough speed anything will generate lift.
