3D stuff...

One suggestion for the name of this forum...

That we either change the CGI part to 3D, or add 3D to the beginning of the name.

CGI can also be a reference to web design stuff...

Now, when I get myself situated a little more for time, I'm thinking of throwing out tutorials for Lightwave and maybe Maya also, on a seperate thread in this forum.

My problem is, that there are many 3D packages represented in the world, and I don't want to see this forum become a snobbish clique (SP?) for just one or two kinds.

Common 3D packages are:

Blender
Bryce
Imagine
TrueSpace
3D Studio
3D Studio Max
Lightwave 3D
Alias/Wavefront
Maya
Soft Image
Sumatra

...and a whole host of Macintosh packages I don't know the first thing about, some of which I hear are VERY good as well...

They all have strengths and weaknesses, and people who use them should be treated with respect that they deserve from their peers.

I suggest a protocol for posting messages that is deviod of "my 3D package kcik's your packages ass" kind of content. These kind of inflamatory messages should be nuked on first contact, and better yet if you intend on posting something like this, then think twice about it, or you could lose some important parts of your post that are relevant to this forum.

So with that said, I personally invite my peers to start discussions on any and all 3D software here.

Cheers!

I should clarify that I am not against a healthy discussion of peoples opinions of strengths and weaknesses of one application compared to another, just the childish hurtful content that sometimes occurs.

The reason for the "CGI" instead of the "3D" is because I want this place to be available for people to discuss things like Photoshop as well.
Any posts that are directly aimed at harassing a package for no good reason will be removed, have no doubt about that.

  • No offence JackN, but for the record, Blender is much more commonly used the packages like Imagine, Soft Image and Sumatra.

    A2597:

Where are you getting your statistics?

My list is just a blanket list of those programs I have come acrossed in use at various jobs, not their order or popularity of usage.

I have yet to see Blender being used in a Professional Studio. This is not to say that it isn't, just that I haven't seen it.

There are a lot more users of Maya, SoftImage, Alias/WaveFront, 3DS Max, Lightwave, Truespace, and many other apps then you might realize... Many of these people are well hidden in the industry.

Now if you want to talk about an across the board usage of a package, then Blender probably is up there in the top of the list because of it being free, easily accessible on the internet, etc.

At the same time, it is probably getting a run for it's money, because of the flood of cracked versions of all the other apps floating around as well...

IMHO, the stats for this or that version are severely tainted, and very subjective at best...

Blender is a very good option for many people though, don't get me wrong...

Yes, you do have to remember that Blender is free while apps like Lightwave and Maya cost thousands of dollars and require you to jump through hoops to get registration keys once you actually get the software, use hardware dongles, etc. Plus they are really aimed at professionals than enthusiasts.

For example, Electric Image, I've never used it, but all 3D in Duality was made with it, and i heard that there was a PC version coming out too.

For those of you who haven't seen Duality, click here: http://www.theforce.net/theater/shortfilms/duality/
