Even the education price is expensive, £599 here in the UK. Ok it is a hell of alot cheaper that £1,500, but still......

Wow. Impressive. This has become a pro tool.

Damn. Where can I get most of US$3,000.

Hey Jack - remember those VHS tapes we were all checking out - Lightwave lessons, introductory through advanced. Does that guy still make them? If so, where can you get them?

Bet people here would like to know - I would.

Thanks.

I don't know how good this guy is. But he's been around for quite some time.

Can you recommend this site, Jack?

"Lightwave 6.5 magic" is a sweet book (it's on that website's book page). I perused that for several hours over several visits to my local Borders Bookstore...

Never bought it, though, as I've been stuck on 4.0c...

I think I could do with a few of those tapes...
I wonder when Inside Lightwave 3D for version 7 will be out. That will be the book to get if you get 7.

Randy: That Lightwave Tutorials on the Web page you pointed to is very, very good. He doesn't write them himself (obviously), but there are some excellent tuts linked from that page, and with the huge number there you will almost certainly find what you are looking for.

Randy: thanks for the link! I have a few more tutorials lying around on this drive. Maybe i'll zip 'em up and put them somewhere. They're great, and happy, and ban be used to blow digital stuff up, and all. Always a good thing. THe site where I got them from is now gone, though. I wanted to get the rest, and should have. they were lightwave 5.6 friendly.

JackN: those are not what I'm talking about. one tutorial was called "Fun with Explosions" and was very helpful at creating great explosions
• PJHPJH The Lovely Thing
"Fun with Explosions" is a tutorial by Dave Jerrard (he works for Foundation Imaging and co-wrote LW 3D Applied books btw). He had some totally awesome tutorials on his site, but unfortunately he's website has been gone for quite a while now for some reason.

And yes, Scott Cameron's "Lightwave Tutorials On The Web" website is THE BEST place for LW tutorials.

Well, I have some of those tutorials on this hard drive. I just have to loccate them. I have saved over 5000 pages into very broad categories.
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Yeah... I'm sure $2k-$3k for a program is pricey for a lot of people, including me...

But, bang for buck wise, Lightwave kicks major ass over having to spend so much on Maya, Soft Image, Alias Wavefront, etc and their maintenance licensing contracts.

The whole 3D arena runs in this way for the most part. You really have to make good money to maintain your proficency, simply because you have to be able to afford to keep the program licensed.

Lightwave and 3DS Max on the other hand, you pay a price that is harsh, but that particular version will always run, and you then pay extra for upgrades to significant newer versions.

I remember the old DOS version of 3D Studio costing upwards to around $3500.00 for one copy of the program.

Lightwave initially hit the street stand alone at $1500.00, and was Windows based!

They charge more now because it is a much more hefty program than it was back 10 years ago.

You can always get freebies link Blender, etc and learn the basics of modeling and animation, and then save up for a commercial program.

Blender is definitely a good place to start, although personally I can't stand the interface.

Ah yes, Betterspace. That has some really really really good tuts on space scenes and models. I could never get their starfield to work though. It would never texture the way they said it would.

• Heh, yea, the Blender interface is VERY...err...intuitive.

Once you get the idea though, it's VERY easy, I mean, absofraginluty no way I could figure out another program 'couse they should all work the way Blender does kind of easy! I mean, I Find TERRAGEN and even good 'ol 3D exploration harder then Blender!!!
