Calling all former ItF/S14 Developers! Where are you now?

samuelksamuelk The Unstoppable Mr. 'K'
In the interests on stalki--er, keeping tabs on some of our favorite developers, I thought I'd ask all of the former ItF and Sector 14 guys to give us a little status update.

What are you up to now? Where are you working?

Has anyone heard from some of the missing Developers? Jeff Reitman (who was so generous with the Trivia contests he used to have), Vassily Flippov, Dan Foy, Dave Artis, Dan Peters, Robin Phanco, Stuart Compton (who we all love for showing us the Warlock), etc.... Where are they?

    I have always been here...

right in front of my monitor.

Christy and I are still working from our home offices in the foothills of the Sierras, about mid-state, California. We've been writing animation scripts, working on computer games, writing children's books, writing screenplays, and continuing to try and sell our TV series called Operation Blue Fly.

    They should rename those mountains.

Jack's still around a lot. I'm sure he'll pop in soon.

Exactly what I thought! Foothills of Sierra sounds too much like 'Fortress of the Enemy'! Maybe they should rename those hills 'Firstones Mountain', 'Randy's Range', 'Sector 14 Plateau'...

Ok that was a bit of a red herring

It would be nice alright to hear from the formers devs who don't hang about here as much.

BTw Randy would The Sci Fi Channel be interested in your tv series idea? I'm assuming its related to science fiction.

I'm still around (obviously), lurking in the corners.

Right now I'm back on my home turf on the East Coast, working at Firaxis.

We pitched it to them. They didn't turn it down, but they never said, "Yes" either. You know, they're pretty tied up with "Taken" at the moment. Last year we came close to selling it to Showtime. But coming close isn't selling it. So we continue knocking on doors. Didn’t it take JMS 5 years to sell B5? And he came to the process with considerably more background as a show runner/ story editor than we’ve got.

Yeah I think it took JMS a good while to plug B5. Just goes to show if you stick at it you'll be rewarded! Good luck with it.

    Hi everyone!

I haven't been around here much lately, but I'm just back seeing what's up.

I'm working up at Microsoft, doing a Crimson Skies title for the Xbox.

Glad to see you guys around!

Vassily is still at Sierra, struggling against all odds to keep it afloat.
Dave Artis - Still in Coarsegold last I knew. He's been working outside of the game industry, though.
Stuart Compton - He went to work for Verant, on Star Wars Galaxies I think.
Jeff Reitman is working here in Seattle with Monolith on the Matrix Online game.
I don't know what Robin is up to.
And Nicolas Gauvin is working with me on Crimson.

She is working locally down in Fresno at a company called SolMark. She uses Lightwave and Photoshop to design booths for conventions. The company has been struggling. In her personal life, she has just released a Christian Music CD along with her husband.

Life is tough work wise in this whole area (as Randy and Christy can both attest to also). I just went back to work at the College I was teaching at down in Fresno. I was pursuing a job at Westwood Studios in Las Vegas just before I went back to work here. Some other ex-sierra people work there now.

How is Earth and Beyond doing Randy? Haven't had a chance to try the demo on my pc in work...

Good to see the former devs are keeping busy!

Earth and Beyond is up and running now. Aside from all of the various factions you can join, and all of the places there are to visit, there is also an evolving story. Writers will be kept working under a head writer for the foreseeable future, continually evolving the characters and the story arc – the arc is sketched out in years, rather than months. I'm personally “underwhelmed” by the graphics, the flight engine and some decisions that were made regarding collision detection, but overall I think it's a fun universe to be swallowed by. I'm no longer working on it, but Christy is still doing a little more.

  • Hey everyone!

Sorry for my tardiness. (Thanks for the email SB...)

I'm at High Voltage Software working on a 3 platform unannounced title. I'm doing AI, gameplay, animation, some physics, and tools programming. Oh, and a debug output system (certainly the most exciting part)

Flash! There is another jedi on the way. You heard it here first! (I'll get you Freeze... ) Due in April or May.

It's good to say hi to everyone. I hope all is well.
