Kick-Ass...

StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
... kicks a$$. I saw the trailers a while back and the movie does indeed not disappoint. Ok, so Roger didn't like it (1 out of 4 stars). Well, apparently he's one of the very few critics who shouldn't have watched it then. Oddly enough he gave a 4 star rating to Pulp Fiction (ok, so there's no 11-year old girl in that one.). As can be seen on the IMDb page, it scores an 8.3 out of 10 and I agree with that assessment. If you go in with an open (juvenile) mind you'll enjoy this film. It's another take on the superhero theme and I think it works, regardless whether you like comic books or not.

Roger is just over-analyzing a piece of footage and maybe he forgot what life at 11 years old used to be. You don't have to be 18 to feel anger, frustration and the need to deal with adversity.

And a sequel is apparently already planned for a 2012 release. Thankfully critics don't make movies (or video games for that matter). :D

I liked it. Even if it's wrong in so many ways I still thought it was kind of kewl and funny.

I agree that Roger is over-analyzing. The way the movie was made, you couldn't take it seriously.

Why is everyone so interested in what Roger Ebert says?

Don't know, just read that review as it was linked in the first post and it wasn't too long. :)

I mean in general. Everyone waits for Ebert to pass judgment on movies as if it was the word of God. Why is this one critic's opinion so important?

Because his reviews are often spot on and here he is quite wrong as is shown by the views of the other critics.

The movie I think shows the cost and risks of violence and does not trivialize it. As one reviewer said, if squirting blood does not make you laugh, this movie is not for you.

I say if Nicholas Cage playing Big Daddy (Batman) makes you laugh then this movie is definitely for you. Just the scene in that trailer where he practices with his daughter is as priceless as it is shocking.

What makes a critic's review 'spot on' though? Agreeing with the majority? Agreeing with the minority? Pointing out technical flaws and plot holes?

I would say that after you've watched a movie and you've read the review you will know if what the critic wrote is 'spot on' or not. If you've read the review before deciding whether to see the movie or not, you will have to rely on the critic's judgment. In this case this judgment will provide a disservice to you as you may skip a fun experience because of someone else's misinterpretation or bias.

The point is that Ebert is usually right and he has been doing a good job for a long while now and that's why people trust his judgment. Of course he's not infallible. That's why I think it's a good idea to have a separate rating coming from his readership which btw, gave Kick-Ass a 3.5 out of 4 stars rating.
