Music in the B5:LotR ad

ArikArik Galen's Apprentice
I just saw an ad on Scifi about the B5:LotR preview somewhere during Dune. I noticed that the music they played was the exact same music that was written for B5:ITF. How did that happen? I thought that music belonged to Sierra?

Thats interesting. Are you sure? I would imagine the rights of the music actually beong to Franke and not sierra so it doesn't matter what the nasty S thinks about it.

The rights belong to Franke as far as I know. Remember, he did use some B5 themes in the game music, and there is no reason he can't reuse game themes in the new series.
(When I say themes, I don't mean as in what you get over the credits, I mean themes as in what composers mean.)

I'm pretty sure it was the same melody. It was the one free mp3 demo from game music tracks available online as far as I remember. The one that had a smooth transition from battle music and 'floating in space looking at pretty planets' music. Don't really know how to explain it but hope you are talking about.
Anyway, that music was playing and they showed a Narn, possibly G'Kar, standing next to some human guy.
Did anyone else see this? It was in one of the commercial breaks of today's Babylon5 episode on Scifi. Come on, anyone? I'm not crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
• Well, G'Kar is featured prominently in the movie, so it was probably him. I remember reading (I think from JMS) that Andreas showed up, and was instantly back into the character.

Here's to hoping we see more of him when it goes to series.

I'm also grateful that Franke's on-board for the music - he's capable of both serenity, and pulse-thumping battle music. Proof that the musical score is another character in the story...

He only wrote the frigging thing!
Yes, and the developers wrote the game code and it still belongs to Sierra. Maybe it's a bit different thing with music though. Well, apparently it is.

This will be excelent. Some of that music is GREAT!
• After listening to the musical composition in the preview, I can tell you that its totally original music.

The closest compairison is Requiem of the Line but its got a different feel to it. So while there is similarities to classic Babylon 5 music, it is new and different.

Im 100% sure of this.

it is like requiem, but much more haunting

I can't wait!

You know, we were told that the ITF -project saved B5:LotR's ass. Whatever that meant. Maybe some assets (music, footage) originally made for the game helped kick-start the project for the new movie. -Or something. That would explain the music similarities if they had to scrap up a quick trailer from their footage archives.

I was not referring to the trailer itself when talking about the music that seemed similar, but the 3-second ad on Scifi saying "Watch Dune for preview of B5:LotR". After seeing that ad a few more time though, I think maybe that isn't the same music as from the game after all...

Geometery of Shadows III, if I'm not mistaken. At least in the one you can download. As I don't have cable, I can't vouch for any others. It's track two on the Bonus CD that came with the Babylon 5 Guide.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Requim and Geo of Shadows III hare the same song (almost)

This is definately one one of those "it depends" kinds of things. If Chris was either employed by Sierra, or contracted by Sierra to write the music for ItF (in which the contract states that all rights go to Sierra -- which is the usual), and he did so and got paid for it, then Sierra "owns" the music. But, if he didn't get paid, or had some sort of clause in his contract that allowed him to re-use the music, then he could legally do so.

Also, musical intellectual property rights is a pretty screwy topic. There are things about sampling, etc... that may make it legal for him to re-use some of it, as well as a ton of other legal details, I would image (though I'm no lawyer mind you). So, it really depends on a lot of things.

But either way, I'm sure it's all on the up and up .
