Give me some old time...

RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
Turn based RPG's! Now, I thoroughly enjoy RPG's. I love the characters, the worlds, the weapons and spells, and I love the slower speed. That is for turn based RPG's. I have not found a real time RPG that is very much fun for me (with the possible exception of the Dungeon Siege demo). So, why dont more games have a turn based component in addition to a massive clickfest (ala Arcanum)? What are some games that are good that do have a turn based play (some of the newer ones, I mean). Well, thanks for listing to my mini rant.

I've always had this in mind to someday make a turn-based sci-fi RPG that plays somewhat like you're choreographing an action movie in 10-second spurts...

Hey, I can dream, can't I ?

The most recent, good turn-based RPG I can think of is Fallout 2. The Baldur's Gate games can be forced into an almost turn-based mode by turning on the autopause function, which puts combat into a sort of simultaneous turn-based mode.

• Morrowind, while not turn based, is of a completely different pacing than a lot of the "clickfest" realtime RPGs..It's a great game.

Ive got morrowind. Pretty damn cool. But I like the top down perspective better for RPGs...

I've taken quite a liking to Divine Divinity...

It's like... Ultima VII... best I can describe it...
• BekennBekenn Sinclair's Duck
I've not heard of Divine Divinity, but that one comparison is enough to make me interested.

Just how like U7 is it?

Divine Divinity looks cool, but has only real time AFAIK. Let me know if I am wrong.

People say it's a Diablo clone (probably because it's 2D and a single-character game), but that's only really on the surface.

My only real problem is the Character Generation (or lack thereof) is exactly like Diablo's, but that's where the comparison ends, as you go on you get to choose skills, feats and spells from the three different "ways" (Warrior, Wizard and Survivor).

So you may not like your starting choice but there's enough options to get your character the way you want. In other words, you may start out as a Survivor (aka. Rogue), but as you get into the game you can abandon the theif aspect and gain fighter's skills and eventually a bit of magic.

The combat is quite good, not quite the Infinity-Engine RTS-ish controls but not like Diablo's "repeatedly click untill the monster is dead" control.

The Storyline, I haven't had much chance to get into, it's the usual fare (which isn't bad), but it's pretty non-linear and you can go wherever you want not even paying attention to the main plot.

As for the Ultima VII Comparisons, that's because most everythingi nthe game world is interactive in some way, and tend to figure into puzzles and whatnot.

For example, my survivor breaks into an abandone house, I find a large stack of Straw piled up in the middle of one room. I decide to look underneath it, so I move everything aside and to my suprise I find a trap-door.

another one is I found a gravestone on which was scrawled "No flowers, especially from my wife --Jake". not too far away I find another gravestone with a pot of flowers on top. The Gravestone is labeled as being Jake's Wife. Against all good sense, I decide to place the flowers on Jake's grave, and is greeted by a rather irritated Zombie who then attacked me.

Wizardry! specialy Wizardry 8! okay, so its first person perspective, and you move around in real time, but soon as combat begins it goes to being turn based

As for top down RPGS, they are a dying bread I am afraid, especially things with turn based top down, I think Ultima 6 was the pinnicle of that type

I tried the demo of Wizadry 8, but just couldnt get into it. I have heard it is a great game, but never grabbed me. So can you play Divine Divinity as turn based?
• WHY_oldWHY_old Elite Ranger
err... no.

Damn. Well, if you say it is good, I always like a good RPG. Is this the best RPG out there (besides Morrowind) or is DS or NWN better? Thanks.

Dungeon Siege is a clickfest RPG.

Final fantasy 3 (6) still rocks all that could be rocked

Definitely. It's one of the best. 4 has a better story though.

I rember the early Phantasy Stars, for the original Sega, then the genisis, before they decided to go with PSO, those were not to bad either.

Wizardry 8 is great game, then again, I imported a party that I beat 7 with, which is the party I imported from 6

Phantasy star 4 is awesome!
• RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
I saw somewhere that NWN can be played as turn-based. Is this true?
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Probably in the same way as Baldur's Gate, since they're from the same people.
