"Greatest" Britons - UK TV

JamboJambo Scriptkiddie
Anyone in the UK watch that program the other night?

NO - F**KING - WAY is that slut Diana one of the top 10 greatest britains of all time, that made me feel sick, and I guess ill be feeling even worse if she wins it.

Who's everyone voting for (dont post if you're going to say Diana, itll make me mad).

Isambard Kingdom Brunel gets my vote!

  • Diana neglected her family during those periods of 'charity work' - notably involving a great deal of publicity work - though no one seems to spare a thought for that, because a great many people still seem to think that she was our fairy-tale princess...

I'm with you on that one, I think, Jambo - if you want to put her on the list then you should equally put down those people who stand in the highstreet collecting money for charity; but I bet they, at least, go home to their children at the end of the day...

I would say that the most recent one I would vote for (if I could) would be Winston Churchil. Certainly not Diana though.

With a thousand years or so of written history they picked Dianna?! argh!

  • You've got to be kidding...

At least tell me that Margaret Thatcher was one of them.
  • If you're having Margaret Thatcher then you're having Tony Benn, and at least ten places ahead of her

Churchill would be a good bet... what about John Locke, who gave so much to the American revolutionary thinking, and liberalism as a whole?

Thankfully she didnt make the top ten so she can't be voted the "Greatest" Brit of all time... thank god.

Winston Churchill. That is one great man.

whilst she doesnt belong on a pedestal, nor does she belong amongst 'the greatest britons'...

she doesnt deserve the labels you've given her.

"before you judge someone, walk a mile in thier shoes."

she was a long way from an angel, but I'd like to see some of you detractors live her life and respond impeccably...

next you'll tell me 'Liz' is the perfect mother in law... Charlie the model husband... Camilla a perfect saint...

as far as the greatest Briton goes ?

    Queen Elizabeth the first...

if being a pretty selfless and truly British Briton is your criteria.

Winston Churchill was a manipulative little toad, bent on power...

fortunately what drove him was not personal. His motives were for the greater good.

he was also a very gifted and clever man, worthy of a great deal of respect.

He is perhaps the only reason America joined the War when it did. This is of course quite inflammatory to suggest, but I doubt Americans would have even lifted a finger until the bombs rained down on Washington or perhaps the Germans landed in Canada...if it wasnt for the chain smoking, depressive, little pug dog named Winston.
  • American public opinion was very much against the war on Europe for a good long while - hence the rallies, and governmental assurances when the war in Europe began to hot up; people didn't want to see the country involved, as it had been in 1914-18.

That much is historical fact - I don't think you've said anything inflammatory Boxer; if people can't accept it then it sounds more like a personal problem to me.

The U-Boat attacks took the war to the very borders of America, but US interests lay primarily in the Pacific, and it took Pearl Harbour to truly bring America into the global war.

Those are the events, but no one can deny that the personalities of the time played a major role as well, and I doubt history will forget Churchill anytime soon for his actions during that period.

That's why I think he is one of the greatest. Noone is perfect, but at least he was thinking about more than just his own goals.

    What about Adam Smith?
  • Political economist - sadly, I don't think the general education system would be sufficient to let everyone in the UK know what role he played in our history.

I agree with Biggles; SB just stated exactly why I think he should have the spot.

  • Oh, I think the winner wil be that gargantuan thinker, philosopher, idealist, revolutionary genius, who is probably one the greatest minds in the history of the world.

    Who am I talking about?
Why, none other than that mighty, walking hair-sallon of a man - David Beckham.

By the way, if he does get a place I may turn inside-out.

    Cherio.
