• The poor state of the tabloid press probably dropped the UK down there - that and the economic/political undercurrents, and the personality cults of the major editors.

Still, I think the quality of reporting is a lot higher in the UK - BBC 24 always seems to feed me a lot more information than Sky. European news in general did really well; no surprises there

Even Michael Deaver, Reagan's Press Secretary, has come out against the lack of access to the Bush White House for the media. The White House has been editing Bush's speech transcripts to reflect what he was supposed to say instead of what he actually said. NO other president had this done, EVER. The Associated Press ran a story that Cheney was already back at work in the White House after his heart trouble HOURS before he actually showed up! The US press is spoon fed crap from Bush and they all take it. Guess it shows how "liberal" our media is, eh?

Also tells you a little something about the so-called "left bias": it's a trap. Everyone criticizes them for misrepresentation so naturally they must be telling the truth, right? Wrong!

    Have fun!

I don't think the media has so much of a liberal bias as they do a "self" bias, basicly the premise that what they report is important and no other news is. I think a lot of important issues go completely unnoticed in this country while the media is busy telling us who J-Lo is dating at the moment, or almost completely focusing on the conflict in Isreal (where number of people killed is in the thousands) while almost completely ignoring the hundreds of thousands that die due to conflicts in Africa.

Agreed, but when they focus on the conflict part of the conflict in Israel, it is of Palestinian suicide bomber attacks not the far more numerous and lethal Israeli attacks except when they are on a large scale. Sometimes, you hear that Israel is reoccupying the West Bank or something but that is meaningless unless you include what that entails. Furthermore, they exclusively report Israeli government figures for dead and wounded rather than Israeli, Palestinian, independent journalist or aid agency testimonial. They typically do this style of reporting everywhere there is an official enemy and or ally.

And how reliable are any of those? Not very. The Palistinian counts are usually overstated.

  • Nice one Rhett, the master of understanding and sense you are not...

There was a very interesting chart in the press the other day, tracking relative rates of Palestinian and Israeli dead - compiled from the reports of a number of charities and organisations working in the area, rather than government statistics - and you'd not be surprised to note that vastly more Palestinians were dead.

So to respond off-hand, and simply say they're 'overstating' figures is simply the work of an idiot - regardless of whether you think the reports are being played up in the press, people are struggling and dying out there. Better yet do you know enough to say they're not reliable? That they may be any less reliable the Israeli figures?

It sounds to me like you're talking with a bias - which is incredibly sad, if true; but if that's the only reply you can come back on Faylorn with then, hey, it looks like the truth might win through after all.

Well, I wasn't planning on getting called an idiot for that, but... Notice how I said that all counts are inacurate. Thats the way it is during conflicts. There usually is no way to tell acurate numbers of dead (especially with the type of urban violence over in Israil). You say I am biased? How can you make such a widespread decision based on three sentances? Yes, I know that there are more dead Palistians than Israilis. Actually a suprising number more. I was not trying to respond to Faylorn's whole coment, only the last couple sentances. So before you flame me, get some more reasons to besides three fairly inoculous sentances.
