hmm..a little help here...

I need to build a PC for a friend, price limit is 500$, and that needs to include
the PC itself and the monitor.

basically he wants a 1 ghz processor min
512 megs RAM, and a fair graphics card.
he also doesn't want anything build in (Ala everything replacable, or upgradable).

myself, I'm finding this pretty near impossible (This is US for those that don't know. )any help would be appreciated.

    Ok...lets see...

140 17" Monitor for $140 (possibly less...but use that as a good value).
50 Ram, lets assume its not DDR or Rambus...(ie, not best and not worst): About $50
    70 Lets assume a GeForce 4 MX card: $70
    40 Power Supply: $40 (for a 200-250 wattage one...I'd want higher, but...)
25 Case...lets guess you can get a cheepy one for $25

Now...you're NOT GOING TO FIND anything less then a 1.6GHz processor now days...

I think you're going to be over price based on that...unless you can find someone giving away an OLD mobo.

All cases I have seen come with a power supply.

It is common for me to see 300W cases for $30-40

I did an estimate for my grandparents. I used the lowest I could for everything and it came out to be roughly $700 for all new parts. Now if you go through www.pricewatch.com you could get a better deal.

I have a GeForce 2 and all games run fine.
Id go with a 1 GHz Athlon.

If you want it that low in cost you must find spare parts. Perhaps you can upgrade parts of your own system and just give it to him, or sell it at a reduced cost.

But I would look into pricewatch.

Geez guys. Y'all are expensive. I built our brand NEW web server, with all retail/OEM parts for under $500.00. That included a 4u server case and a 350w AMD approved server power supply.

    Muhahaha. =)

I can slap together a machine for under $500 easily, its the monitor that will bring the price over $500

    Yep...

Though if you can find someone that can buy it wholesale for you it would help...

i while back i saw 512 sticks for 30 bucks on pricewatch.

dont forget the keyboard and mouse.

What....even with monitor (new) it still shouldn't go over $500.00. The reason I mentioned my server is that I got high grade hardware, etc. and it still didn't top $500.00.

    EDIT: Slight spelling mistake

Striker, where did you buy from? And was it retail prices?

Mostly on-line, a few things here in town, and the case off an e-bay store.
