I don't really have a problem with this, If yer not doing anything illegal on Ebay, then you really don't have anything to worry about.

On the one hand it is a private business and you are able to vote with your feet by not going to their site or using their services. There is a problem with assumption of guilt here and I get an icky feeling. Another question is if they are so willing to give info to the feds; who else are they eager to give info to? What guarantee is there mater will not be abused by an individual in the corporation with a vendetta against a customer? Every person does things that are legal but that are perhaps not understood by the rest of the citizenship that they would like to keep private.

Has the time come for a bill of rights protecting US citizens from corporations and a new drive to protect us from the totalitarian tendencies of government? I personally don't care for all the excessive "big business" bashing that people have been doing lately - however businesses are becoming more and more powerful and informed about everything - that gives them power over people - a power neither they nor the government should have. Is business the new tyrant in the world - a danger to the rights and privileges of the individual?

I don't care for new laws - I don't want to employ more lawyers - but a bill of rights... ...maybe. I'm all for protecting the rights of the individual and helping other people to secure those freedoms - something many of us and most of our socialist friends seem to slowly be forgetting - which sets themselves up to fall into the hands of more national socialist states...

I feel very unsure about all that - and the e-bay story gives me an icky "well they can but…" feeling. We can't even motivate everyone to help free the people of Iraq from President Hussein or Zimbabwe from Mugabe and those are rather clear cut - what are the odds things are going to change on a far more fuzzy subject like this…

I was shocked the e-bay owns pay-pal - I know pay pal just changed it's privacy rules too… …I've never purchased anything on e-bay but maybe I ought to shut down my pay pal account…

For exactly the reasons I have in my post - You're coming form the rational that if you're not a criminal you have nothing to worry about. Well okay lets say you Ranger Brian have political aspirations. I'm a working for a government or a business and I now have the ability to rummage through your sales receipts, computer files, and your bed room - after all if your not a criminal what worry do you have. Lets say I discover a porn or fetish magazine in your room - or that you collect pink stuffed animals and your 55 - things you enjoy but would like to keep private because there are lots of immature people out there. You run for a government office - I disagree with your political platform and black mail you with the info - give me money or I talk about your strange but legal habits - or I just go to the papers right away. Same thing applies if we were up for the same job etc…

You're a perfectly normal person who contributes greatly to society - why should someone else have the power to invade things that you should have been reasonably able to expect to be private and have them flaunted out in the open to your detriment. Any time someone is given power over another it has to be checked otherwise everyone will walk around feeling like he or she have a gun to their head and can't just be themselves. Diversity will fade away because no one will be free to be himself or herself - you're not hurting anyone are you? No - I don't like this one bit. And it worries me that there are people that don’t understand.

I'd rather be dead than unable to be myself for fear of embarrassment or blackmail if I make efforts to keep it to myself and my actions hurt no one else.

I still use ebay every once in a while, But its definately gone downhill, back when i first started using it 6 years ago, you could get good deals, but now people charge close to retail.

That depends what you look for.

Recently, I bought entire car doors for $40. Just the window motor alone for my volvo would set me back between $250 and $300, and the window switches I picked up would probably be worth $100 (just because one frelling mirror switch is borked, I have to replace the whole thing...).

I also got a few full-spectrum bulbs, a really nice new flashlight, a Chumbawamba CD (FYI, WYSIWYG Rocks!), and a humidifier, and a few other things just dirt cheap.

It takes a bit of sifting through the BS, and *loads* of patience to find good deals. I missed out in a few earlier today because I forgot, though. That was a bummer. Working DVD player going for $25 (started at $10), apparently not being bid on because the author mis-typed the subject. Three typos (looked like a bad keyboard to me, because the a key produced "ae") cost it a pretty nice price. It was boxed and all. *sigh*

Then again, I love eBay. Perfect for anyone in college. :)
