Making a new low poly Omega

CnlPepperCnlPepper Earthforce Officer
Hi all, long time no see. I've been inspired recently to make a new Omega model (not for any game in particular, I'm going to release it public domain for modders whenever I finish it). Less talk more pics, here are the WIP images (click to enlarge):

At the moment it stands at just 3170 polys (tri-polys that is ;) ), I'm aiming for 5500-6000 polys. The current textures are temporary (they are the ones I made for the IFH Omega) and will be replaced by an improved set.

Would be interested in your comments :)

Oh and the images are currently hosted on my ADSL connection so if they vanish for a period blame my shit ISP, Tiscali.

CooL!

I wish I could model as good as everyone else here. :(
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
*drool* just 3000 polys? *drool*

Hehe indeed long time. Whats wrong with the current low poly Omega?

Anyway, shes a beaut! Its a great thing making models for anyone to use, and a good idea to keep B5 modding alive :)

I've nearly finished the model, currently sitting at 5500 with the detailed turrets added, I'll post some pics once its finished.

Messiah, I'm not sure what you mean by current low poly model?

CnlPepper - Going to take a while texturing the beast!

Looks really good for a low poly model.

Well here she is, the finished mesh:

The pictures here show the model with medium detail turrets. The mesh above stands at 5924 polys. I've got a set of high detail turrets (for use in close ups in IFH style games) which take the mesh up to 6266 polys.

Without the turrets the base mesh is 4332 polys. The high detail turrets are 1934 and med detail are 1592. I've not made any low detail turrets yet but I'd aim them at >1000 polys (for RTS games). With low detail turrets the total poly count would be ~5300.

Again, the current textures are temporary. As IFH doesn't support dynamic shadows I baked the bulk shadows on the textures, I'm going to make a new set without the bulk shadow baking.

The odd green and pink colour regions are there to remind me they are double sided polys and/or they will be having an alpha texture applied (as such they won't look the same shape on the final, textured model).

Well I guess I've got to get her textured, this will probably take a while as my free time is limited and its a big job! I'll try to keep posting WIP pics.

What do you think?

CnlPepper - Should be asleep....!

Looks great!
The only thing that bothers me (and this is purely personal preference) is, i hate it when engines (or other parts that should be round are that heavily segmented.
• CnlPepperCnlPepper Earthforce Officer
Ah, well round sections are the low poly modellers nightmare.....approx half the poly count is wrapped up in those curved sections. If I was to make them more detailed I'd have to remove a lot of other details to stay within ~6000 polys.

CnlPepper - Wishes all game engines had auto-curve tesselation....
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
Yeah, I'm always battling with the polycout vs. segmentation issue too...
• MundaneMundane Elite Ranger
nice!
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Ah, was thinking about your old projects at tgu. Thought you had done a good low poly Omega at least.

Anyways. Excellent work as always :D

And now for an update...

I've found time to start texturing the model, only the rotating section has been done so far (the other textures are old and are to be replaced). Heres a pic:

CnlPepper - Busy!
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
great looking texture!

do you actually paint those textures, or use high-poly renders als basis for them?
• CnlPepperCnlPepper Earthforce Officer
Cheers :)

I render them from high poly models (I either make them or download and modify them) it gives a nice consistent look that can't normally be achieved by hand painting. Sometimes I do have to fall back to painting though, usually where the rendering hasn't picked out the high poly model details very well.

CnlPepper - He who should be working!

A small update on the texturing progress (click pics to enlarge):

Oh and the obligatory radiosity render:

The model has 4 texture banks (a colour and spec version of each): 1x (2048x2048), 1x (2048x1024), 2x (1024x512) (one of which has an associated alpha texture). You can get very close to the model ;) I'll be adding bump maps in the future too.

Only the colour/diffuse map is shown in the above set of renders.

Nearly done!

CnlPepper - Hoping it will be finished next week
