That's quite an interesting little history.

Yes!!!
• The NETWORK made Straczynski get rid of Sinclair? OK, that's the third story I've heard on that. WHY, exactly, was the character of Sinclair replaced?

Wow, that's a really good review....
• As I understand things - (& looking back through my huge collection of film & TV mags!) - The "TrapDoor" that JMS said he had for every character was activated because the actor that portrayed Sinclair (Michael O`Hare) was perceived to be "Too wooden" to be someone who had to carry a full 5 year arc.The series needed someone who the demographics would *believe in* as a man of action - & not as "cerebral" as Sinclair. The network wanted someone who had a background in Action/Adventure films & TV. Hence the casting of Mr BoxLeitner -an actor well known for such series as "How the west was won" & "The Streets of San Francisco".
I`m Speaking as someone who`s always wondered how the series would have shaped up *if* Mr O`Hare had been allowed to continue into series two as commander of B5.

i have nothing against michael o' hare at all.. but Sheridan is certainly my favourite character in B5. his dynamism and unwillingness to put up with any c&$* is addictive and really gets me going. and you just can't diss ANYONE who was in Tron!
it is an interesting question though; what would B5 have been like without Bruce Boxleitner? I think i'd still have been (and still be)a fan but I think I'd be a little less passionate about it in general.

I have to say that I think Bruce brought a lot of power to B5, because he has such charisma. He was much more suited to the role of leading a war.

That's very true. Which is why I think Sinclair's character was so cool -- he WASN'T used to leading a war. He was thrust into a situation he wasn't used to, and he was slowly becoming a leader.

There was a lot of darkness in Sinclair. I first really noticed that in the episode "Infection" when Garibaldi pointed out that he was always rushing headfirst into danger as if he wanted to kill himself. Sinclair was lost, and looking for himself. He was a great dark character.

• I would love to know what the "trapdoors" for the other carachters were. (Especially Delen and Londo)

Yeah that would be interesting to see.

Sam: I agree that Sinclair would have been more interesting to watch being shoved into the warleader role, but I suspect that the whole Army of Light thing may not have been as powerful in that case.

• Yeah, and we couldn't have had both "War Without End" and "Sleeping in Light".

As for Delenn and Londo, they may have been two that couldn't have been replaced. IIRC, JMS said that he had trapdoors for MOST of the characters, i.e. not all of them.

Oh, I think it could have...Sinclair's character would have grown just like all of the others, just was a changed person in the WWE episodes.
