I don't think it really matters at this point.

What I find amusing is how successful this was as a marketing tool. Having a Gmail account in the beginning was a sign of prestige, or at least something that made you cooler than someone else. And then having a limited number of invites also made you special, as you had the power to "pass on" coolness to other people.
