Problems Playing .ASF Files (Video) on my Computer

Yes, I'm suffering from more computer problems, but this time in conjunction with my DV camcorder.

Basically, it claims to record at MPEG-4, but the file extensions are .ASF, which according to sources stands for Advanced Streaming Format. However, I can't play any of the recorded movies using Windows Media Player (10) or even Divx. (I get the audio, but not the video.) Do I need a file format converter?

I spent quite a bit on this bugger, so I'd really appreciate it if you guys could help. :(

But are you sure you have right codec because sound still plays?
I don't know would [url=http://www.headbands.com/gspot/gspot252dl.html]GSpot[/url] show what codec file uses.

There also seems to be some sort of MPEG4 ASF codec:

as far as i understand it, asf is merely a container for a video/audiostream, mpeg-4 or otherwise.

Cheers guys, my search from your directions led me to download Windows Media Encoder, which worked a treat! (The ASF files are converted to smaller but equally good quality AVIs.) :)

Such unqualified blanket statements are pretty bold. AVI is merely a container format. What's actually important is the codecs used for the data streams.

So if those all work at same time maker of that pack must have done quite much work.

PS. Check with GSpot how many codecs your PC has for DivX/Xvid videos...

I usually download those big codec packs and install the codecs I need from them. I don't usually feel like downloading every codec seperatly.

Right, I downloaded the codec pack and everything seems to be working fine! :)

In short, I've got everything I need to play, and convert the ASF files. Thanks, guys!
