Was it so, that XWA required a joystick? :)

Yes, XWA does require a joystick. But there is a utility called PPJoy that allows people without a joystick to emulate their mouse or keyboard as a joystick. I use this on my laptop and it works ok, but nothing is as precice as a joystick.
