Nothing like DSL!!!!!!

Hehe. I just got DSL this week [img]http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/smile.gif[/img].
They said it would be 2 times faster then 56k Dial up(in my case it connected at 46k)
It was all LIES.. It connects at more then 2x faster [img]http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/biggrin.gif[/img]

    They usually say that so that they are not locked into a speed. My DSL is 1.5mbits/384k, a whole heck of a lot faster than 56k

    I love DSL. I just got it too. About 650k up, 120 down (right now, during fairly peak hours of 4:00 PM)...

    My cable modem downloads roughly 2-4 megabit per sec and uploads at 50 kb per sec. =)

    Do you have a Static IP? and does your cable provider let you run servers? [img]http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/smile.gif[/img]

    I have a static IP and am running a web/file server from it..acutally, we have 5 ips.

    and with a cable modem..when more ppl get on, your speed gets slower, and slower...

    I've got a static IP, and my ISP doesn't block server ports like some do, I'd love to get some extra IP's, but they dont' wanna give me any

    Yeah, I believe it is static. I've had the same IP for almost a year now. =)

    Servers...well...let's just say if you don't talk about them, then the cable company doesn't care. :P

    Cable only gets slower if the infrastructure wasn't put in right. ATTBI has enough nodes to handle all the people here with no trouble. Haven't had a single slowdown yet.

    Hahahaha, Yeah, i know lots of people who do that, Kinda dont ask/don't Tell, But there are lots of cable companies now who block the more popular server ports (80, 25, 110, 21) so that you can't host a server.

    I'd pre pretty ticked if they did that to me, but my ISP is perfectly happy letting me host my own machine.

    Now if i could just get them to give up some extra IP's.. Its nice having my single static and my custom hostname, but i want one for each machine, heh, im' greedy like that.

    *sigh* still running chello here in vienna. well, not the best but where i am i at least get 40kb top, which is faster than for most other ppl in town..

    however i'd love to switch to the isp i'm working for, 10mbit, full duplex, ftth (fiber to the home), static ip, etc... but we're just starting with connecting the whole city with it, so it'll take some time till it gets to me.. bummer [img]http://216.15.145.59/mainforums/frown.gif[/img]

    How do you know? Is that what windows is telling you?...because...that figure, in my experience, isn't necessarily accurate..

    Well, when I still had Cable my connection was always 10Mbit according to Windows, but according to ISP's own software it was 2Mbits, which was the actual connection speed. That was probably because of the network card though, which was a 10Mbit card.

    It also depends on what you are doing, If you are just connected and idle, you are not really "Connected at 8mbits"
