This, and the cancellation of UO2 by EA, has been extremely disappointing. I haven't bought a game in recent memory, since Deus Ex in 1999, that has "wowed" me. Entertainment is simplifying to the 'lowest common denominator', just like pop music and sitcom TV.
I won't quote some quote from someone to try to pretend to be happy. I'm not. I'm pissed off and I hate Sierra. And most of all, I'm disappointed in the mediocrity that American society seems to promote on TV, in games, in politics, in music, in movies, in books, and in churches.

Hey, twinpeaks. Love Lynch, btw. He's one of my favorite director's. I write for TV, write screenplays, was in the music business for a time. I couldn't agree with you more. Christy and I are always trying to push the envelope, but there is so much resistance. Entertainment depends on people with a lot of money. Those people don't want to take any risks. Independents who find a way to get it done are the only ones making anything interesting most of the time. My favorite directors are all the rogues - Altman, Coppola, Peter Weir, David Lynch, Tim Burton. Anyway - there are a bunch of us bohemian types in the US who are doing what we can to end the dummying down campaign - and that goes for interactive entertainment too. Does anyone know what the problem was with getting the game. I know they couldn't get the rights, but was it because they were asking for way too much money, didn't want to give it too us, etc.?
BigglesThe Man Without a Face
Actually I believe that it was a problem getting funding the second time around.

If it is the funding than I would donate like $5-$20 in the "Save B5:ITF" fund. And I don't want to speak for other people but if the money is the problem that I bet that most of the B5 community would donate like $5-$20 to the fund, and with our donations the developers could price the game like $25-$30, like Serious Sam, and not $50-$60 like everyone else. Alternatively, we could start another e-mail with our names to Sierra, Interplay, Microsoft, etc. Also, you would think that Sci-Fi would be interested in funding the game since they are talking over the B5 shows and making new ones. It would be in their best interest to fund the game, and if it is as good as the developers are saying than it would create a bigger audience for B5 shows. However, can someone who was involved in getting the rights to game tell what went wrong?
I think in this case its a little more problamtic. You have to probably pay here A LOT of money to WB for the rights of using the B5 theme (graphics and everything else involved) in the game. I have a feeling that would cost a bomb.
Also, and as much as this is a sad reality, space sims (real ones like this .. not an arcade type like Decent) do not sell well compared to other genres. I do though think that as this is a B5 game, it would sell A LOT more than a normal space sim, but probably not enough.
I think the only chance this game would ever have would be to develop it for MS's Xbox and have MS the publisher. With that kind of marketing (B5 theme combined with the new hype from the console), it would probably sell nicely.
The series are very known in the mainstream market, which is why an Xbox version is the way to go IMO.
Here is what I suggest. I have the full contact info of the VP of Games at MS. I actualy had a meeting with him last Sep. in London during ECTS, and I am pretty sure I could get a letter read by him. I suggest getting one of the developers to outline the project, the theme and everything else involved, and get all the fans to actualy add a nice database of names to the letter (a letter of support by the fans of the game and the show .. a big database of at least 20,000 people). I think that is an option we should look into. I think we should all forget about PC, and think about Xbox, as I believe a game like this, with a solid TV series theme to back it up, would actualy interest MS.
anyway .. just my 2 cents.
BigglesThe Man Without a Face
I believe that an XBox version was a pivotal argument in getting the funding the first time around, and the fact that they would miss the launch the second time around is probably a big part of why they didn't get funding.

I've been a true lurker on FirstOnes for many years; perhaps even since the beginning.
However, I could not remain silent on an occasion such as this. Into The Fire has, for many years now, been the only game I have truly looked forward to. The only one. Knowing it is gone forever leaves... an emptiness.
To the developers, I can only say one thing:
Thank you.
Thank you for all the work that has been done, and all that might have been. I will look forward to seeing more of your future projects; I hope you'll keep us all informed here at FirstOnes (regardless of the directions you take).
And finally, I hope that one day we will be able to hear the full story of this drama. I'm sure it would make a fascinating, if ultimately sad, novel.
Good luck to you all. B5:ITF will be dearly missed.
I have been looking for a B5 game for a long time, and was more than excitted about this game being planed. I know several people in my gaming comunity that were looking forward to this game. None of us knew of this forum and never posted anything. Was this game canceled because of a lack of interest? If so, the extreamly sort sighted goof (yeah I called you a goof) dropped the ball big time. The silent majority of computer game palyers might have had the please to enjoy a game that has both a rich story line combined with intense action. I am disapointed that the game did not come to fruition. I feel in the sorry that the developers and writters in these forums feel. I have a question that I would like to ask of all of you. Is there any way that life can be breathed into this game, or am a stuck playing Agentsofgamings B5 wars as the best solution to my B5 itch?
If there is hope, be it small to none, let me know. I relish a cause, more so when there is a passion that drives it!
I know you guys have never heard of me. But iv been comeing here for about a year (just never posted). I just wanted to say that i think you guys were screwed over hardcore (IMHO)and that iv never seen anyone put up as hard a fight as you guys did. You should be proud.

Well if we did go for the X-Box, remember that Microsoft is desperate at the moment to sign up anybody with a half decent idea. They have made deals with many developers, offering full coverage of all production costs if they sign up... now thats massive investment from Microsoft, and its also a huge risk.... I mean we could have a half chance of attracting some attention from them if we could get something together!
Thats my 2p worth anyway....

Easier said than done.
I have it on "good authority" that X-box does not support multithreading, which would mean we'd have to re-write the core of the game engine to drop to that level.
ITF used several process threads in it's central architecture, so that path was really a plan of last resort.
We talked about that alot about a year ago when we were looking at ways to broaden the appeal to publishers.
I'm not saying it's impossible to do, but there's alot of work there.
